Guelph, Ontario Model Show Train Wreck

I thought you might enjoy seeing a model from the recent show in Guelph, Ontario. The pics were posted over on HyperScale by Andy.... it's a superb bit of modeling! I copied the pics over to my Photobucket here:     http://tinyurl.com/ango63   as the originals will rapidly get buried on the HyperScale Plasticpics site.

Planning and Thinking, Thinking and Planning...

It's 7:20 AM on Tuesday March 10, 2009 and I'm here in my office at school waiting to go to my 8 AM class and I'm thinking about car float design. I've come up with a basic plan for a car float based on a 328 foot deck barge that should be able to hold 15 50 foot boxcars and possibly more. 328 feet of length should be able to hold 17 in my way of thinking which is what the prototype barges held.

Working part time and model railroading

Time for another update on the Hudson and Hartford.

On January 29, 2009 I tooka part time college teaching job. I teach a beginning accounting course at a college in Staten Island, New York and I find it stimulating. Teaching this isn't new to me since I did it full time for 8 years and a college in New Jersey and another in Jamaica, New York. I've also taught as an adjunct for many years as well with last time being in the Fall of 2007.

Hazardous model railroading

I had an op session Saturday the 28th. Everyone seemed to have a good time and got out to their cars safely afterwards. Today I was looking out the window and saw a kitty in the backyard. Perhaps a good thing this character wasn't prowling around on Saturday! Maybe he was the new negotiator for the union and wanted to add a couple of claws to the contract?

Cheers,

Charlie

The Hoboken Shore Railroad Comes to Connecticut

First let me introduce my layout.  I’ve started construction of what has become a “prototype inspired” version of the Hoboken Shore Railroad.  Byron Henderson’s Article in the inaugural issue of MRH spurred me to start sharing my experiences in building my own switching pike.  So before I get to that, a bit on how I got to where I am now:

BACKGROUND

Video from Craig Martyn

Here is a link to a video that Craig Martyn (owner of BLMA Models) sent to me. . . Enjoy!:

Take a look at Tim Dickinson's wonderful HO Scale Burlington Northern empire as we follow a grain train, with manned helpers, over the mountain and through numerous yards and staging tracks.

While the video shows an overall view of the layout, it's difficult to get appreciation for the quality level of this railroad without actually seeing it in person.

Substructure Considerations

As I approach the next construction, I am interested in using materials that would limit as much as possible material travel due to changes in humidity. At my domicile stabilizing the humiidity level is simply not fiscally feasable, so I am wondering if there is another way to deal with the issue.

Track Plan for Test Phase II

Here is my idea for the first level of the next Test Phase. I'm not going to sweat this too much, this is not as much about the specific track placement as it is an overall concept. Still, it appeals to me as it stands. The yard should be sufficient from an operations standpoint to allow me to run this and get used to how to break down and make up trains.

What I will have to make it look like

Spalding with part of the yard circa 1970?

This is Spalding in about 1970.  I dont think that I will have space to house train lengths like this - it is probably an empties train made up from wagons that delivered coal to the adjacent sugar beet factory.

This scene is long gone and the yarf is now a car park and the front of the station opens direct onto a main road.

All clean with the main road in front

February 09 Siskiyou Line Op session

Here's some "best of" photos from the just recently completed Feb 09 op session on my HO Siskiyou Line.

Right off the bat, events indicated this would not be a typical op session on the Siskiyou Line. This session we simulated April 14, 1989 - and since the DRGW has purchased the SP, there's black and orange power starting to show up on the SP. For example, Roseburg had a pair of DRGW GP40s that were available power.
