44 T project front chassis stripes advise please

Greetings and salutations.

So now the 44 T body is put aside for another challenge. Did I mention that this is my first paint decal brass job? Yeah. lots of new stuff learned mostly what Not to do next time! Lol

New Layout

Recently moved house and constucting another layout (smaller). Using a plywood base I wish to reduce the noise level produced by the rolling stock. I have a quantity of Hugger carpet tiles 500 x 500 mmr, very close knit weave. After a trial noise levels were reduced to my satisfaction. My question, "can I lay the track onto the carpet pile or if not onto the underside which is rubber. The visual effect with carpet pile is very pleasing and easy to clean.

workbenches!

Wont be building an at home layout till I move again, but I've set up a workspace to work on some projects in the meantime. Mostly weathering and detailing some locos and rolling stock, as well as building a few kits.  Right now I'm just using a  board I screwed to the wall as a shelf and calling it a workbench.  Id like to set something a little better up, so I was hoping to see some pictures of some of the workbenches that have been built on here to get some ideas.  Show me what you have set up please!

Testors hobby paint question

Testors paint takes an unusually long time to dry.

Does anyone know if Testors   hobby paint are safe to place in a drying/curing booth?

thanks for any info.

have a good week.

transfer.

Let there be louvres!

Where there were No louvres (vents) on my model I have to thank Archer Fine Transfers for their great products!

Christmas train -- would a semi-realistic one be worth the effort to make?

I've never liked the hokey themed trains seen on some layouts. You know, the ones with signs, oversized decorations on flat cars, lighted freight cars and goofy colors. While not quite a rivet counter, 95% of my rolling stock is highly accurate for my modeling year down to the reweigh dates. That last 5% might have the wrong roof on a box car or some similar inaccuracy.

C&O Helper Service in 1943

One of your comments has been haunting me a little,..

I model the C&O Railway, in West Virginia (New River Gorge) Circa fall 1943.  So steam, but no helper service.
Douglas Meyer

This was the war years with LOTS of train activity,...and over the mountains. Wouldn't helper service been used at that time?

Need help or advice

Have a small dilemma. The front of the 44 T has a door handle that sticks out pretty far.  The most important nose decal will not adhere over it.  I don’t think micro set or sol will make this one happen. Shall I just pull off the detail part? Can decal be altered some way? Cut a space for the handle? I am stumped.
Photo below.. anyone have a suggestion? Thanks much.

The Model Railroad Hobbyist Machine Shop

I recently made a post over on my FM H-16-44 DCC Conversion thread about using a milling machine to shave a locomotive frame a bit to create more room for a decoder.  This led to some questions about endmills, use of drill presses for light milling, and other tools like strip sanders, Dremel (and similar) rotary tools, safety around machine tools, etc.  Later I made a post about small milling machines based on Sieg models, and there was some interest in the list of compatible machines posted.
