Modeling general discussion

Weekly Photo Fun - Oct 31 - Nov 6, 2021
It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.
A few folks posted photos for this week on last week's WPF. You can view those posts here, then come back here afterward.
Paint rail with paint pens?
I'm trying to color the rails on my track with a Woodland Scenic paint pen but on seem to get the side of the rail head and not the web. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to modify the tip of the pen?
MRH: We retitled this thread to make it work better for searches. The old title was too vague.
Do model manufacturers just make up freight car examples?
While there's so much about my prospective railroad that doesn't hold up to even slight prototype-type scrutiny and while I'm not worried about rivets and obscure details, I'm trying to avoid the most glaring fabrications. Thus, trying to gave freight cars that generally "look" the real part.

Tom Johnson: Question about your trees
I am at the point on my layout where it is time to make trees. The modeled season is early November and the setting is central Connecticut. I model the New Haven RR in 1948. I've used a photo backdrop and I would like the trees to match that same look and feel.
Layout lighting calculations
I thinking there was a MRH article in the last year or so that included very detailed calculations to obtain good layout lighting. Does anyone know what issue this was in?
Thanks

RailRoad KIts / Microlumina - Is there an Issue?
Have been following LVRALPH's blog on Baxter's build - Building a FSM Structure from RailRoadKits - and I ordered a kit online back on October 16th - website was functional. Other than an order confirmation email that same day haven't been able to bring up their website or check on the status of my order.
Anybody know if they are having issues with their website and/or business?
Thanks,
Artie
smaller sized manufacturing/fabrication industry that is rail served?
Hi modeling experts here on MRH! I really need some real-world type suggestions for a 1990s-ish HO short line layout I'm modelingwith limited space (and not a background spot). I have a spot/nice kits for an old brick factory that i will couple with new Pikestuff annex that's in a old Appalachian town.
list of custom H.O. Scale decal maker
My model railroad is not prototypical. I have already designed my decal sheet using Microsoft PC, not Apple. I know that the custom decaler will want it done in Apple's OS. The last time I used a custom decaler's services was many years ago. I've forgotten his name or the company. However, I think he lived in the state of Michigan. He was a great designer to work with. I'm in need of a dealer that can make decals in 8.5 x 11 sized sheets and is of the water slide type. I need your help.

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em. There were several late-comers in last week's post. Check them out, then come back here afterward.
Intermountain ball bearing wheel sets and Wathers passenger trucks
I replaced a number of 1970s era brass passenger car trucks with Walthers six axle trucks recently to improve operational quality. While the Walthers trucks are a vast improvement over the the ones they replaced, I’m still not getting the rolling quality I’m truly after. They will not roll freely down a 2% grade in my helix. There is still quite a bit of drag inherent in them.
