Moving to here - shipping costs

The thread about switch machines got a little sidetracked with shipping costs, but I want to continue this line.  I had actually gone through and was planning to purchase my Zephyr from Tony's, plus three decoders for my locos.  When I went to check out, I nearly fell over when I saw the shipping cost - almost $50!!  The most I've ever paid for shipping from the US (I am in Canada) is $25, and that was on a $250 order from Online Trains in Washington State.  Seemed quite reasonable considering all the stuff I got.

Marking all messages as read

Hi,

is there any chance to be able to mark all forum's messages as read? Sometimes, especially when I'm away from my Mac for a certain time, I feel the need to reset the forums and start from scratch. If I won't read all the messages I left behind, I'd like to reset the "new messages" counter...

JMRI interface

I just downloaded and installed Decoder Pro. My computer is not locaed in the train room but two stories up in my office. I want to connect a programing track next to the computer to the computer so I can create a roster of my locomotives and check and set the CVs on my decoder equiped locomotives. They all Digitrax decoders and I will be running them on both my own Zephyr and the clubs large radio controlled Digitrax (DCS-200) system.

Changes

Wow been a whirlwind few weeks. I was downsized at work and paid off through the end of the year. Looks like I'm moving from Fresno, CA to South Bend, IN - Sometime in mid-November. My wife is staying behind for work and family reasons. I am taking down my layout - Moving it with me, along with workbench and totes full of my gear. Renting a studio apartment and will get some serious modeling doen during the long cold winter. I saw South Bend has a couple of hobby shops and two clubs. I will be reporting on the move towards mid-November.

Fall photos

There have been lots of gorgeous fall days here in Oregon and so I have been trying to make the most of the fall colors across the street.  Here are a few results, a combination of reality and my imagination.

Any operating sessions for the younger crowd?

Anyone know of operating sessions for the younger crowd (8 years and up)?

I have a 8 year old that likes train but since my track on the layout isn't complete, isn't much fun yet.

Cost of Model Railroading

I quoted one of Bob Hayden's classics when I appeared on the ModelRailCast show -- (" . . . the internet is like a bar where half the people are drunk and the other half are deaf.")

Another classic Hayden was a response to the question "How much does [fill in hobby here] cost?"

The answer, is, of course, "As much as you've got." (Think about it for a minute)

Okay . . . it's Friday, time for a serious lesson in hobby finance and model railroad history .  . .

The New York Connecting Railroad

I just started reading a book about the New York Connecting Railroad (NYCR) that I picked uop this past summer while visiting the Long Island Railroad Museum. It is interesting in that it has coinnection to Sunnyside Yard to what was the once the New Haven railorad by way of the Hellgate Bridge. This book also covers alot of the things I am interested in including passenger operations, car floats, tunnels and bridges.
