Passenger trains "what if"
This was asked in another thread:
If the extent of the Staggers Act been brought about prior to the formation of AMTRAK, would it have been necessary for AMTRAK to have become a separate entity ?
(In other words, could the railroads have provided inexpensive, more comfortable and safe travel by rail in order to compete with the airlines? Could we have developed a more extensive high speed rail system rather than it being limited to the Northeastern Corridor - AKA Acela?)

Painting Model Structures
What are some good paint color formulations for painting model railroad structures. I want something different than just the generic mineral red. Brick building has various shades of goldish red/browns. Would appreciate any advice.

RPM era
I've noticed something interesting about RPM meets. Both the ones I've attended and the ones I've seen documented seem very heavily slanted toward the modern era. I'd like to hear opinions on why. Not that I'm complaining, just a curious observation. I've heard that the most popular era to model is (was?) the transition era, because it is seen as the heyday of US railroading, and it allows lots of interesting rolling stock and motive power to co-exist.
Supporting an old LHS from interstate. Qld to NSW Australia.. being turned away!
I was so astonished by this I have to share it.
Years ago, I lived in Sydney and would travel across town to the western suburbs (no small trip) to a LHS that carried more of the craftsman type of stuff. I had so much stashed away I hadn't needed to buy new stock until now (14 years). I thought I'd email my old haunt to see if they had what I needed.
This is what I sent:
Comment on new layout design
As the topic says, I am looking for comments or advise on my layout design.
Here is a little background. I decided to start in the hobby a couple of months ago, during which time I have been lurking here, reading books and magazines, and gathering knowledge. I have negotiated a space in the garage which is 21'x5' and after a couple of iterations have settled on a possible layout.

Mantua Classics pacific
Just opened up my Model Power Mantua pacific tender to convert it to DCC. Really confused, Power from tender to loco goes thru a combination plug & drawbar. The loco only uses 4 of the 9 wires, 2 to the motor & 2 to the light. All power is picked up by the tender wheels. In the tender there is a chip that 2 wires go thru, probably a constant lighting module. All wires then go to a small PC board with no socket to plug in a decoder. Anyone familiar with this system? thanks
Need Help With Ordering New Set - BSA Anniversary
Please forgive my lack of knowledge as I know many of you are probably more experienced at this than me. I'm interested in ordering the BSA 100 Anniversary train for my husband and sons as a surprise. However, I know nothing about this. I found two different options for ordering but don't know which to order. One seems to be the initial portions of the set and other seems like the full collection. Help!! Which should I order? Will my husband and sons eventually get the same thing no matter which route I go?
