Modeling general discussion

Layout videos

I have to ask something about layout tour videos you see online these days:

Why do almost all of them have a lengthy 'talking head' segment at the start of them?

There's a lot of this; someone who's modeling you might admire but will never make a living as a professional model (or public speaker) drones on and on at length about stuff you couldn't care less about?

DeWitt Clinton

Okay, so... I got a DeWitt Clinton engine from eBay (single boxed engine and tender) and it ran when I got it... but due to it's age, was a bit loud. So I bought some oil for it... "Liberty Oil" that, according to the sales page, was specially formulated for "Bachmann engines", plastic safe... all of that. I put a drop on each axle gear (on the tender, that's where the motor is) and then attempted to run it. Now, all it does is short out the track.

Protecting carpet laid over concrete from benchwork legs

This posting is especially for modelers that are going to use benchwork with legs and carpet laid over concrete floors.  It's a way to provide stable support for the legs and keep them from damaging the carpet.  The "how-to" details follow.

Animated LED Sign on Boxcars - Change Message with Bluetooth from Phone

A pair of boxcars on our club garden railroad contains 8 large LED matrix displays that scroll a message for visitors to see.

The message can be changed via Bluetooth from a cell phone, tablet or laptop.  You can also change such things as the brightness, scroll direction and scroll speed.

Scratchbuilt sides for turntable bridges

Has anyone made sides for their turntable's bridges from scratch?

I'm looking for ideas.

HO Scale BATTLESHIP

I was touring the USS Yorktown CV-10 last Tuesday, and one of the exhibits is a model of the Yamato.  The tracks used for moving boats and planes about looked to be close to HO sclae.  When I got home (today) I calculated the scale based on the dimensions of the model; it's about 2% under HO scale.  BIG model!  Sadly, the pictures came out poorly; the model is, rightly, in a glass case.  BEAUTIFUL work; if anyone here gets a change to see the Yorktown, be sure to visit the battleship room below decks.  (The tracks on the stern of that class are complex enou

Bell Cords

So... bell cords. None of my steam engines have them. They all have bells (duh?) but it's just empty space between bell and cab. I know one of my engines, a Bachmann Richmond "American" 4-4-0 has been retooled by Bachmann with less detail on the tender, but a bell cord on the engine, but I'm not buying another oine any time soon.

So my questions are... is it worth it to model a bell cord, and what are some methods to go about doing it, so it's believable?
