Stop signs for trains....

We have all seen mile markers, yard limit signs, even markers to signal horn blowing, but these are new to me.  Yesterday, I watched a pair of GP40′s deliver 2 covered hoppers to Arizona Grain in Casa Grande. While running down the siding, the Geeps were stopping, waiting for the crossing gates to lower, and then rolling through the street. I noticed as I pulled away, a rectangular red sign that said STOP. Taking train pictures all my life, and I missed this detail?

O gauge turntable plan

I am working on a O gauge layout, and would like to build my own turntable, with a 32" bridge length +/-. Does anyone have plans for this or something close?

Thanks.

moniker decals

Anyone know of a source for moniker decals in HO?  Common monikers are Bozo Texino, Conrail Twitty, Colossus of Roads, etc.

Wood Building Finishes

I'm looking at ways to color wooden buildings without using paint.

On the test panel below, divided by the blue lines, from left to right are

  • pastel (oil) crayon, red light, India ink wash
  • pastel (oil) crayon, red light over gray, India ink wash
  • pastel (oil) crayon, red heavy, India ink wash
  • colored pencil red, India ink wash
  • colored pencil red

Model trains and home appraisals...

Heres' one for you.

I am trying to get my home refinanced. The guy comes over to do the appraisal and tells the loan company that my garage is "unfinished." As a result, my loan did not go through.

Unfinished? My garage is is bewtter shape than the rest of my house. I think the idiot saw the wall down the center of the garage that the layout is attached to and thought that it was not complete. This guy was dumb. How about asking me. He asked about everything else. Frankly, I would really like to break a couple of his fingers, but that part of my life is over.

Aw, Shucks ! North Platte Rail Fest

Would've liked to have been there - oh well! Today, 19 September 2010 is the last day of the three day Rail Fest at the UP North Platte, Nebraska, yard - home of the Golden Spike Tower and the UP Bailey Yard.

You might have noticed that some of the MRH staff hasn't  been around quite as much  as normal the past couple of days.

How can I make an HO banner (strung on poles across a street)?

I can create the art without any problem. Can you suggest what thin, limp, paper-like material can be used to simulate an HO canvas banner and can go through an inkjet printer? Regular printer paper is far too stiff and all cloth that I know of is too thick and coarsely woven to look credible. I'm hoping that there is something that could be temporarily glued to printer paper with low-tack spray adhesive, printed, then cut to size and separated from the paper.

Definition of insanity!

Hope someone gets a kick out of this.  The lengths we go to are amazing!  I've been cutting out decals to do my second AMR all-door that has been gathering dust on my shelf for a few months, and I couldn't resist taking a pic of this.  I hear that you can get blank decal paper and print your own decals.  Maybe I should have tried that.

Insert Image into XTrackCAD 4.0.3a?

I feel stupid. I can't figure out how to import an image into XTrackCAD. I want to "trace" my image with the track elements.

Anyone know how to do this?
