Benchwork - Roadbed

Berlin 1929: Renewal Of The Baseboard

Playing with trains is all well and good, just as long as the benchwork is satisfactory. What I had used from a previous layout was 40mm (1 3/4") foam with a topping of lightly made fibreboard. It worked well enough, but it became clear that the roadbed was not what I required with the thinking of the time - where the turnouts (points) would be operated from underneath.

Shelf Layout Eastward Expansion

Finally broke through the apathy barrier that stood between the existing layout and eastward expansion.

Middle School Model Railroad: first op session of the school year

Things have been moving along smartly and we’ve got enough sections up and operational to run a switch job in the town of Park.

Electrical work for the swing gate track

I got most my wiring done on the swing gate so when it is open there isn’t any power on the gate and 18 inch’s of dead tracks off the gate. I wasn’t thinking about how many switch’s I required to do this when I was in the planning stages. As a result I currently only turn off the power on one end of the approach to the gate. I will purchase a couple more switches in the near future and complete the wiring.

Middle School Model Railroad: section joint anatomy

The Maker Faire is over and I’m finally able to set up the sectional layout that my students have been building for the past few years in our classroom.

The Story of Chuck Baker and his River Valley Railroad

The Story of Chuck Baker and his River Valley Railroad. Starts a little slow but it is a great watch and insight into how a railroad is done.

Middle School Model Railroad: Inglenook and sandwiches

A Mini Maker Faire is being held tomorrow on the campus of the school where I teach. I’ll be hosting a booth for stone cutting and polishing.

Up We Go: Upper deck trackwork

Work continues on completing Trackwork on the lower level. Risers are in and I have started the cork roadbed.

I put the crossover in and happily the risers did stop short of it. Guess I measured that correctly.

I hope to get all the cork down and start fitting track by weekends end.

There will be a lot of work to get the track set correctly at the swing gate and have smooth running across the gaps.

Patience required this weekend.

Substitute for Floquil on wooden models?

Recently I exhausted my supply of Floquil boxcar red.  I tried using Scalecoat 1 on a wood model. Although Scalecoat 1 on brass models gives beautiful results, I am disappointed with the resultant finish when used on wood.  I won't use it on wood again.  Floquil gave gorgeous results on wood surfaces, even when brushed on, and I would like to continue duplicating such fine results.  Has anyone found a reasonable substitute for Floquil?
