Proto 2000 engine trouble

I"m starting to go through my engine collection to see how they're running after a two years of storage.

My collection of Proto 2000 diesels that are "new in the box" are having some mechanical problems. For

example: binding motor in a GP 38-2, another GP 38-2 that will only go in one direction. Has anyone else

had similar conditions with this lot ? Is there a solution to regearing or changing out the parts with aftermarket

items? Most of this equipment is out of warranty. What's the solution?

The First Two Diesels

As I was getting ready to make some significant changes to an old Athearn SD9, I decided to document a little history about this unit and another one on the layout. These are the first two diesels built back around 1980 for my free-lanced railroad.

Question from a reader

We just received this question in email from a reader: Who sells shay locomotives in HO scale?

Anyone care to respond? I will forward this thread URL so the reader can see your responses ...

Stumbled across these on e-bay and watched the YouTube video.  Intersting detail item.

Illinois Central passenger train

I'm going to complete one of my 2013 goals by starting my first blog about making my IC passenger train.

Unusual hoppers

I am wondering if anyone here has more information about these unusual hoppers.  I would like to get a few for my railroad, but I haven't found a model of them in N scale from any manufacturer.  The closest thing similar are the Canadian cylindrical grain hoppers, but these are much shorter and have the open platform ends.

Chesapeake & Ohio L-1 Hudson Scratch-Bash

Over the past couple of years I've developed an interest in scratch-bashing C&O steam locomotives. I've started a couple of locos, which have yet to be finished, but when I came across the "Delaware & Hudson Consol Scratch-Bashes" thread on MRH, it inspired me to go even bigger with my own projects. I couldn't resist tackling a project I have long had on my mind: a streamlined L-1 Hudson.

GLa Trucks

I have two sets of Bowser GLa based hopper cars. (6 in total). These are lettered for Berwind's WV group (white ball). Used on the New River SD of the C&O.

They came with plastic wheels (ugh). I have never likes plastic wheels and have recently instituted a "no plastic wheels" policy on my layout. Meaning I will no longer put a new car on the railroad that uses plastic wheels.  I did this so that this does not get out of control.
