Locos - Rolling stock (general)
Looking for the prototypes on Roundhouse Hi-cube boxcars
Hi guys,
Scratchbuilt 300 Ton, 12 Axle Hot Metal car (Bottle Car)
Here's my current design project, approaching completion.
This time, it's a specialty car for the Steel mill modelers. This is a 300 ton, 12 axle, Reichard "Bottle Car", used to carry molten steel.
The car was designed in CAD, then the pieces were 3D printed in UV cured resin material.
I'm still working on the end platform details, including handrails and brake gear.

Suggestion for ballast hopper modeling?
Can anyone point me to a good starting point for modeling this IAIS ballast hopper? Or even a standard (non-ballast) 2-bay hopper that'd have the right "bones"?
And while we're at it, does anyone have thoughts on the heritage of that car? I don't know why I was thinking Arkansas & Missouri, but I'm not seeing any ex-A&M cars on-line that are close.
Cheap and easy way to test LEDs?
Out of a batch of 60+ supposedly "warm white" LEDs, I've now found two that were actually much more cool white - noticeably so. I'd like to now test the remainder I have on hand so I can send back all the bad apples to the Ebay vendor who supplied them at one time for replacement. Can anyone suggest an easy, hopefully cheap way to test LEDs? I have a micrometer - can that be used? And if so, at what setting?
Can anyone ID the load on this Bulkhead Flat car?
I'm open to any suggestions. What is this load? For years (I took this picture in 1978) I assumed it was a load of ties. Now I realize it is not. I want to model it but would like some clue as to what it was.
First time experience with Shapeways
My friend, Joe Atkinson, and I need to model several ballast hoppers for our layouts. We’ve been researching the different cars and found models to recreate the rolling stock, but one critical component missing were four ballast gates required for each car.
We were told Shapeways may be the answer and indeed they were. We were able to find a dealer, Boxcar Models, who had exactly what we needed. We placed the order and within a couple weeks Joe received the gates.
The completed aircraft cars with Boeing 737's. all canopys and icebreakers are scratch built by me.
SPSF Meadow Sub: Ex-SP Kodachrome SW1500 - A Locomotive Detail and Painting Blog
A couple weeks ago, I embarked on yet another kodachrome repainting project for my proto-lanced SPSF Railway, this time an ex-SP SW1500.
What follows is my personal journal through all steps of this project.
Some weathering attempts
I took some time this past week to try out some of the different weathering techniques shown on Trainmasters over the last year. Here are some of my attempts with varying levels of success.
