20th Street Viaduct

With the New year a new project. I am modeling Denver in 1959 Rice yard is still in operation. With that comes working out how the backdrop and the foreground will tie together. So I am starting with the roads first up is the 20th Street Viaduct. I have some photos of the old viaduct that was tore down in 1992. I will cut most of the bridge out of MDF on my laser, and some 3D printing. One thing that is of interest is that the UP warehouse was build around one of the bridge pylons. This should be a fun project. The real life photo I got from the Library of Congress.

IAIS's West End - MOW boom truck kitbash (plus, mystery arms identified)

As I've developed my Atlantic yard office scene , it's become clear that the Engineering/MOW Department's boom truck should play a key role, as Atlantic is the MOW base for the west end of the railroad, so that truck shows up often in photos of the area.  While the present-day boom truck is a more recent Sterling purchase, during my May 2005 era, it was a Ford F800.  Nothing similar is readily available in HO scale, so I decided to kitbash it, and since other railroads had similar F800s,

Clinton, California gets an orange grove

Well, as Robbie Burns said "the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". I still have not finished my Period Miniatures railroad depot kit because the roof came out really bad, did not even fit properly and I have had to build a new one from scratch. Shingles on that now finished and just painted under the eaves, still to install the roof assembly on the depot walls.

using arduino to sense when a building is occupied by a car

hello, I am trying to work out how to use an Arduino to sense when a building is occupied by a car, be it for loading or unloading. I have an Arduino and several infrared sensors (the kind with the receiver and emitter LEDs on one pcb) and have been looking for ideas on how to use them. I've found some ideas for parking sensors, but they use ultrasound sensors. the idea I have in mind is to use the IR sensors to detect a car and then light either a green LED (meaning the building is vacant) or a red LED (meaning the building is occupied).

Class 1 Railroad Roundhouse Interior

I'm currently building a 14 stall roundhouse (Walthers kits), leaving the rear walls of 5 stalls open to the aisle allowing visitors to view the interior. What equipment would be present in a 1955 era roundhouse? I would think ladders and work benches but what else should I include?  Google searches have not gleaned much information. Any advise would be MUCH appreciated.

Starting an Intermodal Yard on my Trenton Subdivision in N Scale

Comments/suggestions wanted. Taking advantage of some "free" time over the holidays, I have roughed in the area that I planned for an Intermodal Yard on my layout. I have several trailer units that I have custom built with various Canadian transport companies. I take a photo of the prototype, then crop out everything except the trailer side.
