Scenery - Structures

A New Skyscraper for Philly

A new skyscraper was just added to the Philadelphia section of the S scale Penn Western. I had used some sandstone textured foamcore for the flooring of a food court for the train station and thought that the texture would look good as the siding of a building. So, I designed a 180 foot structure to fill a part of the skyline. After rounding up the parts needed and cutting sections of foamcore, the building actually started out as a kit.

Paper mill progress - finally!

After posting the raw parts of a scratchbuilt digester complex for my mill months ago, I have finally made sufficient progress for me to call it (as a wise man recently said) good enough - for now.

The raw pieces were some PVC pipe couplings, a potato chip can, vitamin bottle, some styrene sheet from a "for sale" sign, wood, and masonite.

Video of finished tunnel portal in rock cut

For all of you that's been following the construction of the tunnel portal to remote staging located in the rock cut I've created a little video to show you how it looks from the "train view" via my MUVI micro camcorder.  You will remember that the area isn't visible to trainroom visitors as it's hidden by a foreground hill area.  I needed to scenic the area as I do enjoy making videos with the train cam and I also have a wireless train mounted camera I use during open houses.

Ground goop question

This is my first experiment with using ground goop.  Here's the "formula" I used:

1 C. vermiculite

1 C. celluclay

1/2 C. white glue

1 C. brown paint (needed to add distilled water to improve its consistency)

1 capful of Pine Sol disinfectant

To get the goop to a consistency that I could spread, I gradually add more distilled water to get the whole mess to where I could spread it without spraining a wrist.

HO Signal Relay Cases

I have some HO scale block signals, built many years ago, that have relay cases at the base.  I would like to find more of the same type of relay case, but cannot find the manufacturer (or mfrs.).    Does anyone recognize either one of these?  Thanks.    (I've tried current searches of NJ, Details West, Detail Assoc, Tomar)

I'm also thinking of making castings, with these as protos, but only if the original mfrs are long gone.

Zip texturing

Hi all,

Building a layout can take some time, and mine is no exception. There are a few smaller areas however on which I'm now ready to build the base scenery. In the past I have downloaded Joe Fugate's Ten Mile Creek series which I've found really helpful (I can recommend this series to anyone).

Alcove Expansion - Remote staging pass through tunnel construction (continued) - rock coloring

In my last posting http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/6710 I had gotten to the point of starting to finish and install the tunnel portal.  This posting shows the latest work in that area.

Here the portal is just sitting in place for a test fit after adding paint & grass.

Linka molds

For anybody out there          Has anybody out there ever used linka molds for casting their own buildings?

I came across their web site and found it quite interesting. I was wondering

Vermiculite

Joe, or anyone who has done so, do you still mix vermiculite with plaster when you plan on carving rocks?

Thanks,

Gary
