NW 86th Street - First Pass

The first scenic pass for the town of Clive on my IAIS Grimes Line layout is complete. The area features the NW 86th/Swanson Blvd intersection plus the Swanson Depot Retail Center, the PDM/CB&I spur and the Clive greenbelt. It's a space about 12 feet in length, and is the first thing people see when entering the layout room.

Water tank taper?

I cannot seem to find this anywhere.  As far as I can tell, wooden water tanks were tapered, being smaller at the top than at the bottom.  The question is, how much?  I can find photos of water tanks, and drawings, but they always seem to indicate a single diameter.  Even the ICC valuation drawings I have only give a single diameter, though the photos show what appears to be an obvious taper.

Can anyone tell me what the taper was?  If it matters, I'm interested in Southern Ry., Danville & Western Ry., or perhaps Fairbanks Morse practices.

Interior Detail Parts

I am working on putting together a C&O cabin (QN cabin to be exact, yes like the one in the other thread).  Being as Quinnimont WV is the first thing you see when you enter my layout and being as QN Cabin is pivitol in the sceane I am taking my time and trying to do a good job on this.  One thing I noted when I first put it on my layout  (in very roughed out form) is that with all the windows and being at close to eye level and only a couple feet into the layout it is VERY easy to see into the upperlevel of the builder where the controls should logically be.

SLIDE SHOW.. NEW ADDTIONS TO MY LAYOUT

hello every one...these are some pics of the latest addition to my layout.they were made for my "Phoenix Plastics" industry by Elvin Howland of layout concepts ( layoutconcepts@yahoo.com) i have contracted Elvin to do all the tanks on my layout. to date, Elvin has made 50+ tanks for me & i am very happy & pleased with the outcome. Elvin also scratch builds structures.

Pics of Layout (In Progress)

Here are some picturess of my layout. Your comments are welcomed, but understand that I am not a purist nor a rivet counter. Nonetheless, I was wondering do others use "manual dispatching" relative to switches and signals on a DCC system like I do? My switches are 2 pole 6 ways that let me select which aspect I need. Secondly, my ballast looks much better in person than in the pictures. It is a cheap and neat way to do it, with paint. Also as you will notice I am much farther along on the area that has trees and grass. Pics to follow.    Kyle

L.E.D.s for building lighting?

I am considering using LEDs to light my structures, off of the dc side of a standard powerpack of ~14v. (I use DCC for track). I am curious of what color leds work well for you. Regular yellow ones from Radio Shack don't appear to produce a pleasing color, although I have not actually put one in a building yet. If anyone has been down this road, and can point me to a source and also what resistor you used, I would appreciate the advice.

Thanks, Kyle
