Scenery - Structures
How have you handled mountains on YOUR shelf layout?
It seems a lot of modelers are going to shelf layouts rather than islands for both space reasons and realism. How are you guys handling the higher (and for that matter, lower) scenery on your shelf layouts? Obviously mountains take up space both horizontally and vertically. Being an Appalachian modeler, I personally devote about 1/3 of a 2' wide shelf to the mountains of the region (horizontally) and between 8 and 12" vertically.
And yes, pictures help and would be appreciated. :)
Standards for Road Signs and Markings
I came across a couple websites that have copies of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways. This is a federal publication that explains about all there is to know about road signage and markings. This manual has answered about every question I've wondered about regarding this subject . . sign types, sizes, colors, placement, etc. And about everything you need to know about striping the road.

Painting Appalachian Mountain Scenery
I'm working on a backdrop for my layout. I'd like to paint some Appalachian forested mountain scenery with a little more detail for the close mountains than just some green with a rough tree horizon. I've searched the web looking for resources on how to paint such a scene with acrylic paint, but am coming up empty. Anyone have any resources, tips, or painting instructions that might help me? Thanks!

Blue flag (light) protection
I decided to put some blue lights on the shop tracks for blue flag protection. They turned out ultra bright, not because of the resistor used, but that's the kind of led's that they are. I may tame them down at some point, but not today. Kyle
storrefronts
Does anyone know of a company that makes good quality store pictures to use behind storefront glass fronts. Just having "empty store fronts" just isn't doing it.
Thanks
18" Gage Layout
This is My Buddy's 18" gage, 12" to the 1', Mine layout. It is located in Norther Nevada, on a 40 acre ranch. As you can see it's a point to point layout. Main line is about 40' long. No timetable. Full one way, empty the other. All equipment is operational.
"Rutland Yard" Kitbashing & scratch building Structures HO
The starting or ending point of any railroad is a yard! I decided to start a new layout by creating the yard and city first. The Track arrangement is based upon the Rutland Railways Rutland Vermont Yard. The Delaware & Hudson railroad being the other main railroad I model will share these facilities.
My goal is to kitbash and scratch build structures to closely match the prototype. Elements of both the Rutland & Delaware & Hudson Railroads will be combined to create the overall look of Rutland yard and the city of Rutland.
Green Bay Second Try
OK here goes again. These photos are of the Green Bay Industrial Area on my layout. The first shows Green Bay on the right & part of the branch line leading to the lumber mill at Hardwood. The second shows the other end of the branch line with the lumber mill in the distance. The rest of the photos show some of the buildings. The three on the right are scratch built and I will be having them judged for merit points for getting my Master Builder-Structures, Certificate of Achievement.
