SP Lordsburg Sub - as of 170226

So, I've been laying (digital) paper-to-pencil for awhile now and think I have a workable, double-deck track plan. I'll post snap-shots of the various deck plans subsequent to this initializing post so as to keep this section short/brief. However, some background...

It's planned to be the SP 1982-ish from Tucson, AZ to Lordsburg, NM. When SP was largely single-tracked in this area and still had working semaphore signals. I'm designing it for operations.

Revising the Morris Stockyard/Feed Lot & a 3D Printer

One of the key industries for my layout was the ATSF stockyard/feed lot located at Morris.  It was designed to service at least 18 each 40 foot stock cars at a time and their associated livestock.  The purpose of the stock feed lot was to rest/water/feed the livestock while also cleaning & servicing the stock car trains traveling from the west and traveling to Chicago. The original track alignment is shown below.

Starting children on Model RR; When and how?

I am an American living in Germany, and I have two children that will be 3 in April. A boy and a girl.

Both show an interest trains; The boy more so. For now, they have a bunch of hand me down Brio type stuff, and enjoy building tunnels and stations from blocks.

Anyways, I was wondering what everyone's thoughts and experiences were in regards to taking the next step..

First, when to start them on "scale" trains and what type if set to get? I have a few ideas.

Rolling stock display diarama

I would like to build a diarama to showcase modern(2007-present)rolling stock. I need your help deciding what type of scenery, such as midwestern, rocky mountains, appalachian. I also don't know how to arrange the track, because I want to incorporate this into a future switching/shelf layout.I am doing this project because I don't have space to have a real layout. It would probably be 2'x4'.

Feedback on Shelf Layout

I am in the design phase (have the shelf already up, it is 18" deep by 8'-8" long) but wanted some feedback on my sketch. I'm not good with proportion and arent sure if I will be able to fit it all on there or even more.... The hill and stream must stay put, they are already there on the shelf but if you could give me some operational feedback or anything that would make it better. I want to try and get as much switch as I can without it being too crowded.

Initial Yard Design

Hello all,

I'm currently working on a design for a model railroad.  Though I would share my plan for the yard for some comments.  Thanks

Round 2

Hi all,

I'm looking for any thoughts or suggestions for the most recent version of my HO logging layout ( the first version is at http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/28454 ).

The area is based on British Columbia / 1930-40, with inspiration taken from a few logging lines of the Pacific Northwest especially the Capilano Timber Co. which ran out of North Vancouver. I wanted to model a point-to-point plan including a logging camp with a few facilities, log trains running through tree-filled terrain and a dirty, industrial port area.

Start Small, THINK BIG - TOMA project layout: DESIGN (part 2)

Miles Hale and friends build a project layout in the TrainMasters TV studio using the principles of The "One Module" Approach, also known as TOMA.  In the second segment, Model Railroad Hobbyist editor Joe Fugate rejoins Miles to discuss the design of the project.

Follow the planning process as they determine the design parameters, declare layout standards, and hash out a trackplan.

Scott Perry's very interesting idea on a "Living" railroad using Arduino

This is from Scott Perry's blog and very interesting.  It's a bit of read, but worth it. Scott is a close friend of mine and his idea may revolutionize model railroading.  What do you think?  Please check out Scott's blog and tell him your opinion.
