They're here! Premium handle upgrades for your ProtoThrottle!
One long brass handle, two short brass handles, and a red plastic handle for the brake. $45 for the kit. Available at Trainfest this weekend. Special discount when purchased with a throttle at the show! Come see us at the Spring Creek Model Trains booth.
Also available on the Iowa Scaled Engineering website shortly after Trainfest.
Gadget alert
I've been contemplating some staging / storage tracks, which due to their location in the room layout would be obstructed from view. I've noted the efforts of others to put cameras in place to see these tracks, usually with automobile backup camera kits.
Shenware Mi Trains
Hello All
I recently purchased the Mi Trains and Waybills programs from Shenendoah software.
I am having a heck of a time trying to paste a photo to the Card card, and appreciate any help. Here is what I have done:
ProtoThrottle Brass Handle Update
We are working on getting the brass ProtoThrottle handles available for sale later this year. Right now, we're working out the details with our machinist, so I don't have an exact timeline or pricing yet, but will let you know when we get closer. The red plastic handles will also be available near the same time, perhaps a little earlier.
In the meantime, if you can't wait, two of each size of the brass handles from our initial prototypes are on eBay. Those interested can bid here:
Protothrottle speed curve
I'll buy a Proto Throttle relatively soon based on the great feedback I've seen here on the forums. Tim Garland had written an article addressing a number of custom settings including momentum and deceleration curves. What I can't seem to find is mid- and max-speed settings.
What have others found to be good speed settings? Are you doing min/mid/max or a custom curve? What values are you using?
i'm trying to get to the most prototypical settings and would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Facing point turnouts
Hi guys, I am designing a layout with 5 industries at the end of a spur line. All industries have facing point sidings. Whilst I appreciate not all will be visited in any one session, can I get some ideas on how to switch them please.
Which customer should be switched first, eg the first along the line, or the last. Where should I place the in-going cars that are on my train; at the beginning behind the loco, or at the end of the train. I have 2 runaround tracks close by that I can utilize.
thanks in advance
Anyone in northern New Jersey first op session need 3 guys
Hello anyone out there want to be a part of my first operation session. I live in northern New Jersey my layout is a is mostly a switching layout. With some run through freights. The era is 1980-1983 based in the northeast kingdom of Vermont between St. Johnsbury vt, Newport VT, and morrisville VT I model the lamoille valley, CP rail , and Boston & Maine railroads as well as some early Guilford mixed power. Fair warning my basement is still some what messy but more then enough room to operate the railroad.
Magnetic Train Brake
The post about magnets used for greater traction got me thinking about a train brake using a magnet under a freight car to pull up a rod. I was surprised how well this worked as the test track held the car at about a 45 degree angle without letting go. Sliding the car away from the pin releases the "brake". I doubt that one car could hold a whole train but I'll add a couple cars and see how well it holds at a normal grade of 2%-3%.

Special Visitor to the Layout...
Today the layout had a very special visitor drop by for a look and run on the layout. Kevin Lee Klettke from http://wnrr.net/ fame has been keeping in touch with me for some years now. And as luck would have it, Kevin was visiting his daughter here in Melbourne.
