Carfloat,...railroad barge

ID this carfloat?

Last weekend I picked up a misc box of HO parts at my local flea market. In the box there was a plastic carfloat model about 23.5" long that was made in 2 sections. It was 3 tracks with an interchange, and the rails were metal.

The only identifying marks were a molded on the bottom

Any idea as to history/origin of this model?

I can take some photos later if desirable.

Broadway Limited Imports N-Scale Locos

I'm considering the purchase of Broadway Limited Imports N-Scale EMD SD40-2 with DCC and Sound for my layout.

Have any of you had any experience with the running and sound quality and reliability of this loco or with any of the Broadway Limited N-Scale diesel locos?

I would appreciate any information you might like to share on this subject.

Cascade Bob

Almost done redoing brass 0-8-0 project

My goal for this old 0-8-0 is to clean it up, weather it, paint the rods and rims of the drivers that have lost some paint over the years, and change the numbers on the cab that should not be there.

Decal silvering: why some do, and some don't?

Like any good modeler, I gloss coated my model prior to decal application. I used rattle can Kryon 'gloss' and gave the entire car a nice coat of gloss. I let the gloss coat dry 24 hours before decal application.

I applied a variety of sizes of decals, various companies, age of decals unknown. Clear, white and yellow film depending on the decal.

Decal A. The one and only good one after a flat coat. The COTS and the "keep off roof" yellow decal also turned out without silvering.

Removing roof walks from Athearn Genesis Trinity 5161

I have two Athearn Genesis Trinity 5161s that I would like to repaint but to do that I would need to remove the roof walks. Before I ruin something I wanted to ask if anyone knew a good way to remove the roof walks? Thanks

Grandt Line Boxcabs

I have four HOn3 Grandt Line box cabs. They all "run" fairly well with the original drive supplied with the kit. They sound like little grinders, but they run!   I've added different pickups to help them run through the turnouts, but now I'm looking for a way to upgrade the entire drive to make them smoother, quieter and more reliable. I looked into modifying the older HO 44T and 70T units (the ones with the self contained power truck) but the wheel would interfere with the motor mount.

Radiator Grilles

Why do the flared radiator grilles on modern diesels exhaust downward?  I'm sure there is a technical reason, and it's not just done for appearance sake.

Quality of engines

Just a simple question, but expect a lot of complicated answers. LOL If a person who has no knowledge whatsoever about HO diesels wants to buy a GP7 or GP9. And lets assume it is a PRR. Now: there's Athearn, Bachmann, Walthers, and who knows how many more. How would the decision be made? Price? Details? Running quality? decoder quality? Or buy a DCC compatible and what decoder? You see the dilemma? Yes, price may be a determinate factor, but how do you know you get the quality you expect for the price you pay?

Can motors. Mashima versus Sagami

I'm researching can motors. Does anyone have a preference?

Window shades or venitian blinds in UP passenger cars?

I am detailing some HO scale Walthers Union Pacific passenger cars, both heavy weight and and light weight. I want to put window shades and venitian blinds in them, where appropriate. In the prototype photos most of the time the they are blurry enough that you can not tell which type of window treatment they have.

Does anyone know which cars or eras who have one or the other? I would suspect that venitian blinds would be more likely on light weight cars.
