Covered Hopper Hatches and Commodity

With regards to the type of hatches on similar type covered hoppers, were they specicfic to the type of commodity being transported? There were/are square hatches, round hatches and the car length rectangular hatches.  In modeling  various dry chemical/plastic pellets, fertilizers, grains and sand, what is the appropriate style, if any, for the hatches?

A better way to lubricate your locos

I've seen some discussion on other threads about loco lubricants, and thought it would be useful to start this thread. I don't use the standard hobby oils because of what a chemist told me. I use Synthetic auto transmission fluid.

The Dexron II is a synthetic oil, which has several advantages over natural refined oil. Here's his comments:

Adding a F.R.E.D. to a railcar

I have been toying with the idea of wiring up a flashing LED circuit to use as a flashing rear end device.  To make the device truly useful though, I think it would need to pickup power from the rails.

I see that Intermountain metal wheel sets are insulated so they should work well for power pickup wheels.  Any thoughts on that?

Tank Cars

I need information about AC&F type 21 riveted tank cars.  I do know that the 21 designation means cars designed in 1921.  Type 27 cars were designed in 1927.  I'm not certain about type ICC 103.  Prior to type ICC103w or welded tank cars in the late forties, when was the last year anyone built a riveted tank car?  Anyone?

The Black Caboose

It's nice having someone in your ops crew that likes to paint locos and rolling stock. Here's what Joe Brugger did to an undec Athearn blue box bay window caboose.

Replace bulbs or install resistors?

I just bought a DCC ready Proto 2000 GP7. The instructions for the Proto call for new bulbs if outfitting with a decoder. But TCS recommends putting in resistors. What's cheaper and what's easier...hopefully one way is both!

Thanks!

BLI Blue HO Diesels

I'm not familar with the BLI line. I see they are about to release a second round of HO SD9s - in SP to boot!!

Proto 2000 Phase I, II and III...what's the diffence?

Just curious....any differences in decoder installation vs. Phase I and II for example?

Building a BNSF business car fleet

Well, after much debate and tossing ideas. Im now head deep into an awesome project! Im working on a BNSF business car fleet circa 1995-2000 and have posed questions on other groups, and decided to make my 1st post here and get some more feedback. So far, I have 4 cars, and 2 undecorated cars. I have found 3 cars that are 90-95% accurate through walthers for the (dining car) Fred Harvey, (coach) Valley View, and the baggage car #77. The #77 uses the 72' baggage car new from Walthers.

Axian Storage Boxes - a Review

In another topic, I was asking about the Axian Storage boxes, and whether anyone had had experience with them or other storage boxes.  As a result of that discussion, I went ahead and ordered 4 (from Axian). I thought others might be interested a review of sorts.

Axian, the company.
