Locos and rolling stock

Use it or lose it?

Use it or lose it - so the saying goes.

I did sneak back into the layout room to run some track cleaning cars around the layout and discovered something very interesting!

It seems that of the twelve locos sitting in the Matthews freight yard that four of them wouldn't run - and they all ran when parked there about 6 months ago!  Of the four locos three of them did nothing - no sound or movement.  One of the locos the sound only worked but it wouldn't move.

Repowering an old AHM GE Center Cab Small HO Diesel

I asked a few questions on "another" publication's forum about this topic, but I am still seeking some solid advice on this first loco rebuilding project.
First- I picked up an old AHM Center Cab for literally a few bucks at a recent local swap meet. The shell was in very good condition, and I used my "purple stuff" to get every bit of the original paint off.

Trying to be realistic

I'm looking for a little guidance for the length of train to run on my layout.  The era that I am modeling is the mid-50's.  The layout room is 18' x 19', but I think that there will be 30" aisles along two of the walls for access to the electrical panel and to keep from having tracks across the entryway into the room.  My plan is to put together a multi deck layout in this space (more on that in a later post).

rock train

I have some Walthers 40' Ortner hoppers but I would like to buy a different model because my plan is building a unit rock train. I know Walthers makes Greenville 100T hoppers.

Options please?

new athearn 50' superior dr bx

Athearn 50' Superior box car: just wondering if anyone new if these models are accurate to the time perioed. athearn says that these cars ran from 1970-90's. i looked at the DRGW historical site and they listed those particular numbered box cars as red not yellow.

Experience with Bachmann Spectrum N-Scale USRA Light 2-10-2 Loco?

I'm considering the purchase of a Bachmann Spectrum N-Scale USRA Light 2-10-2 locomotive that was released this year (2011).  I'd appreciate hearing about your experience with this loco, good or bad.  The N-Scale Locomotive Encyclopedia gives it an "A" rating with a few minor quality control problems.  It looks like it might be a good addition to my N-scale steam roster.

Thanks for your help.

RPM West Coast Photos

This year, as with RPM Naperville in October of 2010, Joe DElia (of Proto Pwer West/Aline/New Rail Models fame) took charge of the Western Prototype Modelers meet, and rebranded it as RPM West Coast.

The meet looked allot more crowded this year then years past, with the usual West Coast companies present, Exactrail, BLMA Models, Railmaster Hobbies, Aline, Athearn (to a small extent), and Details West.  Also included were a few other small companies.
