National Train Show - Combined Freemo-N layout video

Just in case you haven't seen it, there is a cab ride video tour of the combined Freemo-N layout that was at the show.  Peter Keppel did a masterful job producing this video with sounds and titles.  It is a time-lapse, high speed ride, so take your Dramamine!

Freight or passenger cars as lineside structures

I am ready to start using some of my older and less desirable rolling in a new capacity. I have seen a few examples of how old rolling stock have been turned into diners, storage sheds, open and covered bridges, ends and sides of buildings, retaining walls, etc. What I would like to see is a bunch of ideas or maybe I should say prototypical pictures of these structures. So, post away !!!!

Conveying modeling location--some ideas for the modern era, and hoping for more ideas

The recent article on conveying modeling era, combined with my recent vaction, driving from Florida to Maine, got me to thinking about modeling location.  We all think about the architecture and vegetation (I hope) when planning a layout for an area, but there's many other things that can convey location, some subtle, some not so subtle.  Here's my notes, and perhaps others could add more ideas.  I'm modeling the 1920's, so much of this won't help me, but should help other people.

Scenery colors... Union Pacific

Hi all.

To be a Portuguese modeler, and loving Union Pacific trains is sometimes overwhelming.

I had enough with the greenish, Christmas look-a-like layouts that I build over the years, and I would like to try something new to me. Yeap, you guessed it, Mike Confalone's BEAUTIFUL Allagash made wonder if I could do something like that, using some of his scenery techniques.

So, here is where my doubts come in:

Quick and Easy Yucca Plants for your desert layout

My Tombstone & Southwest Railroad layout needs lots of plant scenery native to the desert.  So I'm always on the lookout for ways I can add to it.  In my flower garden I noticed that the seed pods from my cornflowers looked a bit like those luxuriant yucca plants you see in desert surroundings, so I set about trying to make some mini yuccas for my layout.  As you can see from the image they didn't come out too bad.

Backdrop painting video - hills and sky

Here's a video I produced back in 2011 showing some techniques for painting clouds with an airbrush and producing simple distant hills backdrops.

Cheers,

Charlie
