In-ko-pah RR: The Dos Manos Jail

Just past the east end of the town of Dos Manos on my 1/24th scale railroad, there is a wiring junction set into the ground between two tracks. Last fall I poured a mortar foundation around the junction box:

Unique (Literally) Bridge

While catching up on the news this morning at our local channel 5's website, I ran across an article about the Boston University Bridge on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.

The Boston University Bridge on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston is the only place in the world where a boat can sail under a train driving under a car driving under an airplane.

I thought some here would find this interesting. I did a quick search in Google for some pictures:

Lookiong for info--1920's road markings...

I'm modeling the 1920's in Maine and New Hampshire--what would the road markings look like?  The first bit of the layout will be a road that goes through the heart of downtown, with either asphalt or concrete.  Also, where can I find info on the roadsigns of the time?

Modeling Asphalt roads

I've been working on a small mockup to test some ideas for asphalt and street trackage.

So how many millimeters wide is a "HO 2X6"?

Reason I ask is that I'm  thinking on building something that  calls for "HO 2X6's" in scale strip wood but ordering that kind of stuff is not in the budget right now so I'm looking for more common everyday alternatives. I'd ask for the width in inches but I already looked it up and got some decimal figure  like .026 which does not translate well to a typical ruler. Math was never my favorite thing!

Walthers ADM Grain Elevator Question

Quick question, I'm looking over the instructions before I begin, and I see qty four (4) of part# 10 on the same "trees" as the main building pieces (#'s 41 and 40), but nowhere in the instructions does it say where they go. They look like they should be part of the main building itself, but I cannot see where to attach them.

Thanks, Grampy

Plastic Prep

I recall using a product called Plastic Prep from Testor's.   It was used for cleaning oils and grease from plastic before painting.  It has been discontinued.   Could any household surface cleaner be used instead?

Request for prototype structural advice - 'false front' buildings

As you can see I am embarking on a card and paper store building, so far I've made the window and doorframes and fitted them to a front.

I need to know details of the means of construction, flashing etc between the back of the false front/sign and the roof, in the area indicated. Web searching has not really helped so far.

How to make a crude lunch counter stool very quickly and easily in HO scale

A standard paper punch makes a hole about the right size for a lunch counter stool.  If it won't be seen from the side, but mainly from above, then punch some holes in sheet plastic and use the centers for stools.  Crude, but may work well.  If you need thickness, then perhaps the nub of a Lego brick can be cut off the brick.  Neither one will be contest quality, but many interiors need not be super detailed.

What is in a Gateman's Tower

I have a pair of Walther's Gateman's Towers.  One, I've built already, but with floors and roofs unglued so I can add interiors.  What is actually IN them?  The top floor has so many windows so that I need to add something so it's not just a big empty space,
