Realistic Trees (Super detailing woodland scenics trees)

Hey all,

I know it gets talked about a lot, but I wouldn't be a model railroader if I didn't add in my take on making some trees!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2NVNPvr3Y4

I've been building some of the woodland scenics trees using their armatures and fine leaf foliage and thus far am really happy, but I wanted to give the trees a little something more! So I experimented with adding bark and adding some human interaction by attaching a ladder and tire swing.

Weathering Concrete Ties.

Hi Guys,

I've watched a bunch of How To Videos, and read a ton of articles about weathering track.

However, what I am struggling with is what paint to use to weather the concrete ties on my layout.

Would I still go with a Railroad Tie Brown? Or do I use a rust colour for the rails and then use a Grimy Black for the centre of the track?

Thanks in advance.

blast holes

As I drove out I-80 w. in northern NJ a while ago, I saw that there are some respectably good-sized rock faces along the highway (New Jersey isn't all flat, you know!), and something else about them as well. There are vertical grooves on the rock surfaces; what's left of the bore-holes into which they put the explosive charges to blast away the rock for the highway to go through. I don't recall ever seeing these modeled (although I bet someone will pop up & say they've done it for years!).

Plaster and plaster cloth techniques?

I've helped friends out and built my own mountain.  I've tried a few different techniques 1) one layer of plaster cloth painted with hydrocal 2) 2 layers of plaster cloth and rock forms added.  I've applied the plaster cloth over webbed cereal box strips, and using many less strips, hot glued non-metal screen material over the strips and then added plaster cloth.  I also used the old brown paper towels and plaster method, this method works well but is the messiest of the techniques.

Got Rust? Realistic rust for your layout

I will have a salvage yard on my Richlawn Railroad layout and I'm always looking for natural looking (and cheap) stuff that you'd find in a salvage yard.  Much has been said about making materials look like rusty metal and I certainly will need some of that!

The other night when I was getting ready to grill I was looking at my "anti-flare up plates".....

Bought a watch

I bought an old watch at a garage sale for 25 cents. Took it apart and this is what I found. I wanted to have static grass growing through the gears but my batteries were dead.angry
