Track and electrical/DCC

The ProtoThrottle - so easy that an 8 year old can use it.

While I was talking to Scott Thornton, one of the other guys muttered, "He's back."  Ends up they were talking about an 8 year old boy who had hung around a lot yesterday..  And who had been using the ProtoThrottle too. And well.

Ends up... his parent's own a local railroad and he's run prototype locomotives. He thought the ProtoThrottle was easy.

Simple electronics! I need a resistor I don't have...

I have a box nearly Full of 1/4 watt resistors... but I'd feel better using  1/2 watt in a simple circuit.  (

All tutorials I find handle the calculations of resistance as resistors are combined.  Fine... series is additive,   parallel is inverse average... but watts???  I'd think it's distributed over parallel resistors, and want confirmation before I fry things.  How small can my parts be before they don't perform?

What gauge wire should I use for the feeder wires on my N-scale layout?

What gauge wire is best for feeder wires soldered to my code 80 N-scale track?  What gauge should I use for the buss wires attached to the feeder wires?

DCC command stations with multiple throttle bus support

I am considering replacing my DCC system on my layout.  And I thought I read someplace about a new system that supported various companies throttle bus systems.  Such as Digitrax, Lenz, And NCE as well as it’s open system.  But after looking through here and doing a couple searches I am not seeing anything,

Am I just missing it or was it a dream?

Either way I am still considering a replacement system.

Interpreting Decoder type

In JMRI, Create New Loco, when I "Read type from decoder, it says "Found mfg 123 (Massoth Elektronik GmbH) version 123; no such decoder defined". What do I need to do?

Controlling loco from JMRI

I connected my JMRI through NCE USB to NCE Powercab.

Underlayout sound (again...)

Hi,

I'm looking to add sound to my N-scale layout, but not using the in-diesel or in-rolling-stock method. I want to use under-layout sound because all the in-diesel sounds I have heard are not what I want. Scale sound considerations aside, I would like to hear more bass/rumbling that those small speakers can provide.

Help with DCC

I'm thinking of making the switch from DC to DCC for my 3' x 6' N scale layout.  I don't anticipate running more than 3 or 4 locos at a time, and I expect to be the only operator.  Couple of questions:

1.  Is there any advantage or disadvantage over competing brands of DCC equipment?  NCE vs MRC vs Digitrax?  Pricewise they all seem about the same for their entry level systems, any benefits to one brand vs another?  There are no model clubs or other layouts near me to visit, so I'm having to rely on the kindness of strangers.

What to use for powering accessories

Hey guys,

MRC Prodigy Express

My MRC Prodigy Express appears to have stopped working.

It was running fine this morning but, this afternoon I went downstairs to run some more trains and nothing!

Symptoms: Locomotive does not respond to any commands. The sound on sound equipped engines work (a steady idle) but none functions (lights, bell, horn) respond to commands. The control unit lights up and appears to be working.

Troubleshooting efforts:

1. Tried different engines, both sound equipped and non-sound. None of them work.
