Track and electrical/DCC

Turning out the (head)lights...

I'm just getting in to DCC (Digitrax) and what I want to do is to run 2 units back to back as a permanent consist. I know they will share a common number, but what CV's would I need to configure so 1 unit's normal direction of travel is reverse and that when the units are traveling in reverse of their normal direction the headlight on that unit is out ( in other words, only the front headlight of the lead unit is on)

Wiring LEDs for P2K SW 9 / 1200

Help!

OK its not that bad.  However, I want to change the 1.5 volt bulb (rear lamp) in the cab of my little switcher to an LED.  I need some instructions or help on how to dis-assemble the cab from the body in order to get to the bulb which is up in the cab roof/ceiling.  Information on how to do this is scant on line or only partially helpful.  Is there a way to remove the cab from the rest of the shell?  I can see how it might come apart however, I do not want to do anything stupid which will ruin a perfectly good little engine.

Sound Only Decoders

Joe suggested in his Electronics Video (vol #3) that sound could be added to a consist by placing a sound only decoder in a dummy locomotive.  I am in the process of picking up some old Athearn BB dummy SD40-2 to add some sound decoders.

Now what would be the best decoder to get?

Weathered or Non Weathered Track.

I was reading through the Code 83 / Code 70 thread and it got me to thinking about another question.

Basically, I was wondering what are the basic pros and cons of pre weathered flex track and or non-weathered track?

Is there any down side to using preweathered track?  Is it worth the added cost to avoid hand painting the rails?

Thanks

Detection circuits

I am just now returning to HO scale after many years.

In the "way-back", I used Linn Westcott's Twin-T.  Now, in searching what else is available

I found Bruce Chubb's CMRI detection circuit, but it is a fair expense.

Then I found articles by Rich Weyand in Mainline Modeller on a variety of great circuits

for detection, signals, and even a complete CTC system.

I've seen no mention of these on any forum discussion anywhere, and I'm curious why?

Correct Digitrax Zephyr current output

I recently acquired a Digitrax Zephyr DCC system.  When I first bought it, I hooked it up to some test track and ran a locomotive on it to verify everything, and the locomotive ran without a hitch.  Now, I'm finding that I get no response from any locomotive.  I disconnected the unit from the railroad entirely and connected a multimeter directly to Rail A and Rail B outputs of the Zephyr.  I'm finding that it's outputting 15 V AC at 0.2 amps.  I thought that it should be supplying the 2.5 amps of current.

Anyone interested in a DIY Locobuffer how-to?

I'm about to start assembling mine (using Hans Deloof's pc board) and was wondering if anyone would be interested in seeing a somewhat step by step. ie, should I put down the soldering iron and take some pictures along the way?

The downside is I don't tend to assemble things in any specific order, so it would mostly be: here's a pic of the empty board, here's a pic with 1/4 of the parts installed, 1/2, 3/4, fully assembled. And then maybe a few screen shots of programming the PIC chip. Which is as far as I can get at the moment since I am without a DCC system.

Atlas True Track N scale

Hello Everyone I'm a Newbie to the forum here.

I searched as well as I could but found no information so I hope I am not out of line asking here.

Does anyone have any experience with the new Atlas True Track. I am especially interested in the turnouts and how or if they are powered . Atlas seems to be keeping it top secret on their site and hasn't responded to E mails.

  Thanks for any insight.

Control Panel Central Midland

We are at the point where its time to decide about a control panel. Roadbed, track and switch machines are finally done except for one area that is up for review. We used Tortoise switch machines on the whole layout after starting with the Atlas. That was a challenge that I thought would never end. My back was killing me and it was to late for a hard hat. So I have only found small pieces of instructions for a control panel. Anyone have information available or a site they know of that is all encompassing for a control panel build?

DecoderPro, Digitrax PR3 and my computer

I finally put everything together to use Decoder Pro to do some basic setup on my decoder equipped N-Scale fleet of locomotives. I haven't attached it to Loconet because they layout is downstairs but it isn't ready for track just yet. But I did set up a programming track attached to a Digitrax PR3 and attached the PR3 to my computer. It seems to work nicely but I do see an error message after it seems to set a CV. That error message reads: Timed out on communication with command console. The CVs do seem to set themselves correctly when I read back the settings however.
