DCC and Flyback diodes on turnout magnets
Hello, I would appreciate some advise about Flyback diodes on turnout magnets. Because recently I fried my DCC system. The damage assessment concluded it was a major electrostatic discharge or some other kind of spike that killed my system. I came to think there may have been 2 reasons: Myself rolling on wheels underneath the layout getting loaded electrostatic (most likely?), and/or magnets in relays and switch machines causing flyback voltage spikes. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyback_diode

What is the best way to deal with short circuit in older turnouts with out replacing them?
Having switched to DCC in the last 2 years. I find that most of my 6 axle diesels short out on the turnouts. Usually at the frog. I suspect that the center wheel is making contact with the opposite rail and causing the short. I use automotive bulbs as a short management so most of the time its no problem as the locomotive will get through ok.
The No Ox thread
Every now and again a thread appears on track cleaning, methods etc. It seems that there is a growing number of us into or getting interested in No Ox. It also seems to me that we can go off topic of the original thread, spin it to a whole new direction or flat out high jack it. I was going to post again on another thread and felt bad as I thought we were high jacking the other thread so I thought I would start this thread and add my&
Location of resistor with LED's
Quick question. When using a resistor with an LED, can the resistor go on the cathode side or the anode side? I've got some 3 lead bi-color led's and it could save me some resistors if the resistor can go on the common cathode.
Thanks,
John
Atlas Switch Machines == Work?
Has anyone been able to make productive use of the Atlas Deluxe Under Layout switch machines? I bought eight of them for my two deck layout and have been unable to make them work. Oh, the solenoids are quite forceful, but the actuator is so flimsy that the inertia of a free moving throwbar is enough to prevent operation. It appears that the actuator arm is very underconfigured.
Advice on scratch building crossing
I am looking for advice from people who scratch build their own track work especially those that have built crossings.
After trying to build my first crossing, I think that I assembled the track components in the wrong order. I originally started with the inner frogs and worked my way out.
I now think that I should have started with the outer points, then the outer rails, then the frogs and finally the guard rails.
Does that order make sense to anyone? Is there a better order?

Spike Length
Does anyone know the length of Walters #948-360 Code 70 spikes? I am ultimately looking for 1/2 spikes, but I am finding that many manufacturers do not advertise lengths.

New track power options and working signals
HI all,
I have a question, that may perhaps be a little difficult to answer, but I am hoping not. I am still building my railway, but I am wanting to put in a signal system. Being that there are a number of new systems involving battery option out there, that seem to be coming forward, does anyone have an idea on how that will work with a signal system, since most run in conjunction with a power train through rail. Or will it be no different?
Thanks for helping
TCS FL4 decoders Warning
Found this in a Yahoo DCC forum that might interest some and prevent frustration.
FYI.
A fellow in a DCC forum mentions that he has a new batch of TCS lighting decoders with two wires swapped. The green and blue wires were soldered in the incorrect places.
The blue (common +) is suppose to be on the outer edge however the factory had the green wire in this position and the blue wire where the green was suppose to go. Apparently the green wire is not used so there was no damage.

Trix Decoder
Any one know which decoder Trix used in Loco 22185. I need to re-map a function key so I need the manual. If anyone can point me in the right direction to look that would be great. I have search the internet and can not seem to find anything. The manual that comes with it does not say nor is it a complete decoder manual.
Thanks!
