Benchwork and roadbed

Help switch linkage from side
As I have stated in other posts my computer controlled commuter shuttle will be sharing one track of my double track helix. The helix is aprox. 4 feet by 6 feet. to conserve layout space I have decided to branch out the shuttle track from the shared main line in the top leg of the helix. My problem is that mounting a slow motion switch machine under table would interfere with with the track on the helix underneath. So I have to control the switch from the side. This is a situation I an not familiar with. Is there commercially sold linkage that will solve my problem?
Masonite Splines
I think everyone in the past has used untempered Masonite for spline roadbed. I cannot find this anywhere. Not Lowes, not Home Depot, and not the best private lumberyards in Charlotte NC. I can get tempered hardboard anywhere but it is smooth both sides. Has anyone used this and can I glue it with Titebond II ? Blayne

Roadbed, yes or no?
Hi all.
Now that my Micro Engineering track is on it's way to Portugal, it's time to start messing around with the layout again.
SO the benchowork is made out of dimensional lumber:
And on top, I'll add foam core card.
On a short line layout, should I use corck road bed?
Thank you for your time.

Light-weight Alternative for Ballast
Getting close to the point where I'll be laying some track on my O-scale "Chicago Fork" layout.
One of the goals of the layout was to be light-weight and portable. So I've been thinking about light-weight scenery options; and one item that comes to mind is the ballast.
Now then, each module is only 4' long and there is probably around 10' of track on the "busiest" one; so probably not talking about a great deal of weight ... but when things are getting measured in pounds and ounces, even a little bit can add up.

squaring beams
OK, so I ditched the idea of the Back 2 Base-ix modules. I am using 18x40mm DAR pine, and am finding my saw keeps wandering in the mitre box. Is there a more economical, easy way to square the cut ends than to buy a disc sander? I am getting nowhere with my sheet sander. Would a drop saw also leave the need for sanding afterwards?
Modular layout construction
Having just watched Ken Patterson's video on his modular layout construction. Wondering how he handles the switch machine installs and track wiring with what looks like 2'' solid foam layered construction. Also wondering what roadbed Ken uses. Considering building a new rr to replace my existing one. It's on the second floor of a 32' x 80' barn. I like the idea of being able to build a new rr while the existing one is still operated. This way down time could be shortened greatly. Would be much easier to remove the rr when that time comes in the future.

Curving kerfed homasote roadbed
I have samples of two commercially available HO scale homasote roadbed that are available with kerf cuts to enable laying curves. Given the tendency of homasote to break when curved (kerfs or no kerfs) I'm wondering how tight a curve is practical without cutting curved pieces to begin with?
WS Foam sheet replacement
I'm starting to build a new 4x8 N scale layout. I need to make it portable and wanted to use the Woodland Scenics 1" foam sheets as a base. Is there a cheaper replacement out there available at a hardware store? The WS boards are adding up in $$$ and I just need the foam sheets as a durable base.
Thanks-Tim

Solid foam "benchwork"?
While shopping at Lowes today, I had a crazy idea. I was looking at some compressed cellulose board (sort of like Homasote, but less dense?) and some 2" thick foam beadboard panels. They're certainly cheap, and reasonably light. I wonder if I could make layout benchwork out of them?
How does one upload a jpg picture to a web post
I tried to copy a reduced size picture from my computer to my web post reply to the topic about support for an upper deck. The picture was there when I edited the post but disappeared when I went to another web site and then came back to see my post. The picture was gone and replaced by a question mark in a small blue rectangle (Safari on an iMac). I was looking around for a how to do it section on the website. Maybe I missed it (home sick with the flu right now and my head does feel filled with cotton a little right now).
