Benchwork and roadbed
Road Bed/Ceiling Tile/ Spline Questions and comments...?
Well i have been reading this forum nad topic for a couple of days now. As I am starting a new layout, and the first one tht will be a perminent layout., I have read so many opinions on this subject I have become confused on what to do?
1) Is spline the best? Is this something a first timer should do? Will this cut down on noise? Or should I combine it with cork road bed or vinyl road bed? Yes I have seen the videos by Mr. Fugate, but lets face it the is not a "newbie."

PVC / Vinyl moldings for spline sub-roadbed construction
I'm getting ready to do some expansion and have abandoned using 3/4" plywood for the sub-roadbed because of the difficulity of cutting and waste in favor of spline construction. I know many use hardboard, and some use wood, but has anybody used the PVC or vinyl strips that are used for molding? They are available at the home supply stores in ready to use (no ripping required) sizes that can be glued together. I know they are more expensive, but won't require painting, don't swell / shrink like hardboard can when wet, and are ready to use.
Thanks,

24"X48" Ceiling Tiles for road bed Least expensive method

Is that what I think it is?
As I watch Joe's videos, it looks like in some areas there is sheetrock on top of the plywood base. Am I seeing things? It actually is an interesting idea, as it would provide you with a smooth surface on which to lay track, But you could add shallow contours easily. The question would be if there might be a Mold issue. Any thoughts?
Fiber Board as roadbed?
Recently saw a product at Home Depot called Fiber Board. Comes in 3' x 5' x 1/4" or 1/2" sheets . Used fro floor under layment. Wondering if anyone has used this fro roadbed. Its cheap, well stocked and looks promising.
A question on Spline roadbed ...
I have been working on a layout for awhile and have not been really happy with the plan, but I have been trying to soldier on, mainly because I have never finished a layout and this one is finally running. Circumstances have changed, however, and the rest of the basement has become available for use, so I want to start fresh. I have just watching Joe's videos and wish I had seen them 2 years ago when I started.
Painting cork roadbed?
Tried to search this but didn't come up with much. I'm trying to figure out the best process for laying down track. What I've done so far:
1. Layed down the actual track and traced around it onto the foam bed.
2. Cut the cork to fit and layed it out according to the tracings. Glued it down with latex caulk.

oil stains
I'm hoping someone can give me some pointers on darkening the ballast down the center of the rails. I'm trying to make it look like there are oil stains and residue from the trains passing along the rails. I've tried using a thinned down wash of soft black acrylic paint and brushing it down the center of the rails, but it just soaks into the ballast and doesn't get dark enough.
