Warning about Ballasting with real Dirt & crushed stone.
Before you use real dirt or crushed stone on or near your Track especially for the purpose of Ballast make sure you run a Magnet through it to see if there is Iron fillings in the dirt.

Cork Roadbed... Where to get it?
I'm looking for a way to get bulk cork roadbed for cheap. I have seen rolls and sheets of cork at a building supply store, but they were either too thick or too poor a quality. I am modeling in N-scale and am wondering if anybody knows a place to get sheets of cork that weren't originally intended for Model Railroading.
I plan on cutting it into strips myself... just need the right thickness/quality.
Any help/ideas would be great!
Thx, Dustin
Width of subroadbed
One of these days I am going to cut some subroadbed out of plywood.
How wide do you normally cut your subroadbed?
I am in HO.
Brackets or legs?
How wide would you think that a shelf might be if you want to use only brackets. I'm planning shelfs about 1' wide, but the section of the maín station needs to be 2 3/4' and I am planning to use an L-girder benchwork. Do you think I could manage with wide sturdy brackets, or would you suggest legs in that area?

Transition from mainline to yard
I am working on my latest layout. It is N-Scale and am using Atlas c55 track and turnouts. The benchwork is L girder and 1/2 ply. I am using Midwest strip roadbed for the main line. I am comfortable sloping down to plywood level for sidings because it is just sloping track, but I have come across something that has me wondering.....
Best Roadbed material
Hello everyone,
I am a newbie at model railroading and I have just completed my basic 4' X 8' benchwork. I have been on many sites online and some recommend using Homasote and others recommend using a 4' x 8' foam sheet. Can you tell me which is the best or what are the pro's and con's of each.
PS: Thanks in advance and I really enjoy the work that was put on the new MRH issue 1.

Layout room structure modification & electrical
OK, stand back, I've got my work hat on. My day job is with a municipal fire dept. fire prevention division, and I used to work as a building and electrical inspector. The following is a caution that is really important.
If you are modifying the structure of your home to build a layout or layout room, you must make sure you're not taking away needed structure, or overloading existing structural elements.
Full Sized Paper Templates: Permanent Under Track Laying and over Plywood Bench Tops?
Joe, I saw somewhere online that you'd used full sized paper templates for a yard and laid your track over them.
Was this a permanent installation? I'd like to do this, but am concerned that cork roadbed and glue, etc. will either not permanently adhere or cause moisture intrusion to lift roadbed or ground cover scenery later.
Can you (or others who've done this) please tell me if it's possible to leave the entire layout's paper template under everything (covering the entire plywood bench top) and how long your layout has operated without issues if you've done this?
