Custom modeled freight cars and other N and HO models

I have been practicing my CAD skills over the past few years, and recently, I decided to design freight cars, detail parts, and other models. As an N scale modeler, I have been involved in the hobby for many years now and have noticed that there is a certain limit manufacturers reach when producing models: only a certain amount of new models can be researched, CADed, tooled, manufactured, and released every year.

In search of the "best" pre/post decal matte/gloss coat

I've been struggling dealing with MicroMark raised surface decals and silvering. As a result, I came up with a test rig to test various matte & gloss coats that are available in an effort to find the ones that have the least amount of silvering.

More details about what I used and the results as they come forth.

My First Layout Video Update: 3D Printed Canoe, Demolishion Progress, Walthers Boxcar Review, and More!

Hey all,

I just published my first layout video update. So far I have been told that I should relax a little to ease my tone of voice (I don't normally sound this bad) and to make things flow a little better. I'm looking for suggestions/advice/comments so I can improve things without making myself look like a fool even more.

Scratch building a CNoR Third Class Station

Even though I don’t run passenger equipment on any regular basis, I wanted to have an old station for my layout, it has seen better days, bit of modernization but retaining the old charm of days gone by. There are many station kits available to suit the design requirements, however a winter project with a little more involvement was what I wanted to get into. For inspiration I chose a CNoR third class station like one sitting in a field just a mile down the road here in Emo, Ontario. This, the old Barwick Station, was a perfect candidate.

when did Walthers buy PROTO 2000

When did Walthers buy out the Proto 2000 line from Life-Like?

And what years did Life-Like produce the FA-2 in HO?

Track Planning and Designing My New Layout

I've been working on designing a new layout that I will build in the next couple years. I decided that my current thrown together 4x8 wasn't going to meet my needs, both operationally and aesthetically. Here is what I've come to so far:

Acrylic stains and washes for wood

I have used the old alcohol/india ink for staining wood, but the color choices are limited.  There are lots of acrylic based washes that work well on plastic and resin, but are there acrylic washes and stains that work well on wood?  Water based washes tend to warp wood and also raise grain and "fuzzies".  Any ideas?

thanks,

Rob

Painting and Decaling

I have a Front Range ACF covered hopper that i would like to decal.  Its unpainted, and the grey in which it is molded is the perfect color for the final model.  Can  i just spray a few coats of gloss so that i can  get good results with the decals or do i really  need to paint the model and then prep for decals.

Would appreciate your opinions.

Joseph

San Francisco Hamm's Brewery - 3

Ever since starting in model railroading, I have like large industry on a layout. Of course, my meaning may be a bit different than you may think. I like my structures to be proportional to the railroad models. What I mean by this is they have to have the look and feel of the real thing. Those of you that have read my blog have undoubtedly seen my model of an ADM facility. This structure dwarfs the rolling stock on the layout, just as it does in real life.
