Major updates to the online Google RGS right-of-way map!

Some years ago, preparing for a Colorado trip to explore the remains of the Rio Grande Southern, I discovered mapping, on Google maps, and started 'drawing' the RGS right-of-way, looking at satellite imagery, and pairing what I found with the old right-of-way maps in various RGS books.

My RGS - video tour posted

With a bit of trepidation, I got inspired and filmed a short video tour of my layout.  It moves pretty quickly, and has more of a drone feel than typical layout videos; I wanted to do something different.

Anyway, here it is -

Op session at night?

So, I hosted a couple sessions for the local Chicagoland RPM meet in Oct, but due to poor weather, distance, and maybe some mix-ups in signup, had no takers.  But some local guys came by to help host, and we ended up having a great time.

An early goal of the layout was to enable night lighting, and perhaps even operating at night.  With the addition of a few penlights, we actually did operate - nearly 1.5 hrs - and had a blast.  It's hard to photograph in the dark, but here's some photos.

Op session Jun 2019 - photos and commentary

See the blog post for lots of photos and commentary from the last operating session on the layout.  This was the 2nd in as many weeks, and we had a full 7-person crew.  It was also a test of some updated paperwork and scheduling.

Biking the Rails - so cool!

While on a vacation last month, we tried 'biking' a railroad right-of-way, with bikes that runs on the rails.  It was really fun, and a great way to experience the right-of-way and terrain.  Move details & photos on my blog:
