While on a vacation last month, we tried 'biking' a railroad right-of-way, with bikes that runs on the rails.  It was really fun, and a great way to experience the right-of-way and terrain.  Move details & photos on my blog:

WOW!

Looks like fun and really close to me too!  Hope you enjoyed your time in Vermont too!

Only three miles open for “bike traffic?”

Mileage may vary - litterally

I knew someone who did that on an abandoned logging line, run by some small company. They said it was very boring and not very scenic.

Just keep that in mind when bringing along non-train fans. Also, make sure the people you bring with you are fit, otherwise you're going to do a lot pedaling alone.

North Eastern Washing State has one

North Eastern Washington State has one if you are out that way. Never been myself but I am modeling the track line and it is a beautiful area.  https://lionsrailriders.com/

If you come out to Oregon...

We have two of them with three different rides - https://ocrailriders.com/ is in the Tillamook area, and http://www.jbrailriders.com/ is up in the Wallowa Mountains - my parents did that one this past summer, and if my mom can survive it, just about anyone can.

I think this is the one mentioned above in Washington: http://www.vcrailriders.com/

Buffalo Creek and Gauley

Clay County West Virginia has rail biking on the old Buffalo Creek right-of-way.  Intriguing but I don't know if my old feeble butt is up to it!!!    https://www.facebook.com/pg/CCBDA/photos/?ref=page_internal

Biking the Rails

Very nice. I have seen one with two seats a couple years ago at the train show in West Springfield, Ma.

There is also a place somewhere in Rhode Island I believe.

Right now I ride rail trails in my area, about forty miles, with an KHS 200 eBike. One trail right next to the Pan Am, Amtrak main line an crosses under it to another trail.

I can do Western Mass to New Haven, Ct. on rail trails, an old rail line. Not boring at all.

I did read a couple years ago Amtrak might allow bikes on the cars up into Vermont. Have to look again.

A station nearby in Northampton.

Did a couple of rail trails in Vermont

this summer.  Richford to St. Albans (CV?) was interesting and Morrisville to Jeffersonville on the old St. J & LC was interesting and very scenic.  I left a picture of a bridge over the Lamoille River in an earlier post.  Here it is again.

Both were done on road tires with no problem.

I'll have to look at the western Mass ones.  We spend a long weekend in Ware yearly and have to pass through Northampton on I-91.

The rail bikes sound like a hoot.

If you ever get to New Zealand

Try the Forgotten World rail Tour, Taumaranui to Stratford. (BTW - Taumaranui is 20km north of the Raurimu Spiral)

My wife and i took a tour in early May this year. It was great fun and no pedaling as they are electric carts.

Biking rails

Unless the rails are abandoned and you have permission, you are in dangerous territory. First of all you are trespassing! The RR is not liable if you are hurt or killed. Did you know that a person or vehicle is struck by a train, on average, every three hours in the United States? See tracks, think trains.

Man, if that vehicle is struck by a train every three hours it must be awfully beat up!!!

Sorry, but I couldn't resist.  Yes, I know that it is serious business.  Good to know.

Vehicle

Rick, Not only the vehicle but that person! I volunteer for "Operation Lifesaver" and as you know it's a dangerous world out there. As a volunteer conductor for the North Shore Scenic Railroad I have seen too many close calls with both people and vehicles. I am afraid one of these days I will be working when it happens. there have been a number of idiots people and cars hit over the years but none seriously. Just wanted to warn the folks out there.

Had a RR policeman say he can always tell the bright jacketed trespasser from the worker. It's the white tennis shoes that give them away.  Duh!
