Rail fastener consequences in a derailment

Some local derailment news today: a freight train coming through town on the UP main track had a derailment which rerailed itself. There were no major damages but the train was delayed and blocked some grade crossings for a couple hours, making motorists unhappy according to the online newspaper report which showed a photo looking across an empty center-beam flatcar at a grade crossing.

I went sightseeing on my bicycle to look for derailment evidence. The Madison Street crossing shows new flange marks, but the next crossing a couple blocks away does not.

NP Yacolt Branch Question - Place name called Hidden

Hi guys i hope one of the NP fans out there may be able to help me with a praticular detail,

Loads to and from a match factory?

Looking to add an industry, and recently thought of a match factory. Seems like there could be a good variety of shipments. Anyone know what would be shipped in abd out of a match factory? Uh, already figured matches would be going out...

Flangers

So I've been contemplating making a car that can be used to clear the flanges on track after ballasting (and can be run every so often to make sure no debris is interfering with operations) and then tonight, while in the porcelain library, reading an old model railroading magazine, I discovered "Flangers"!

Freight cars parked on bridge?

This bridge across the Willamette River at Albany Oregon funnels considerable traffic from the Toledo branch and West Side lines to the Portland & Western (former Willamette & Pacific) yards in Albany and the UP main line.

Switch throws; finally

I do not know how far switch throws should be from the turnout. Can someone help me? I model the mid fifties, CNR branch line.

Prototype Industries for Switching Operations

Recently there was some discussion regarding prototype Inglenooks and an interesting video of the Chicago Terminal working a food processor.   I also see more interest in smaller more manageable layouts and the TOMA concept.  I can say from my own experience with my current layout it does not take a lot of industries for interesting operations.   Check Lance Mindheim's recent posting on his website regarding the operations on his new LAJ layout.  Some of the switching track plans I'm seeing look way over crowded to me.

RR's and Hurricanes

Since we have an impending hurricane, I thought it might be interesting to tell the MRH readers what real railrods are doing because of the hurricane.

The railroads have been watching the storm since it entered the Gulf.  Once it strengthed to where it looked like a hazard (about two or three days ago, they would begin making plans.

Every ballast car in the region (maybe the system) would be loaded and sent to staging areas about 100-200 miles inland.  Carloads of ties (for cribbing) and bridge material would also be inventoried and possible pre-positioned.

Heavy Graffiti

Graffiti, as we all know, has been around a long time (even ancient Roman ruins had it) ad even here in America, we have had graffiti that dates back well over 170 years... modern graffiti (with the spray cans) seems to date back to the first spray cans (1927... or 1949, depending on what source) however, it wouldn't be until about the 1980s that it became a real problem on the railroads.

My curiosity is... why?
