Norfolk Southern-themed video and photos

Hello all.

I've been busy shooting and editing together a video for some Norfolk Southern locals and a few new NS photos. It only seemed fair after spending so long doing so much CSX modelling.

The video shows some NS run-throughs and a bit of switching by the Pine Belt Southern B23-7

The photos show the NS SD40-2 in the West Yard at Sweethome Alabama

I'd like to see them make:

I expect other people also have lists in their minds of "things I wish someone would make." Mine includes the following:

- Face decals. Painting faces of figures is tedious and, for me, hopelessly inaccurate. Sticking a decal on it would be much simpler.

- Hands, perhaps etched in brass so they can be folded. Many otherwise-useful figures have poorly molded boxing-glove hands spoiling their appearance.

I'm sure I'll think of more as my brain awakens. Who else has ideas?

Happy railroading!

Why did Santa Fe stopped running steam by 1953

Lighter Camera

Hi,

last Friday I received my new lighter camera. This is just fun! It's small enough to fit on an N gauge car. By incident we had our monthly Windigipet (the steering system) meeting on the same day. There we have a demo layout with 3 circles: H0 AC on the outside, H0 DC in the middle and N on the inside. I had my lighter camera running on the N circle and a Big Boy was running on the AC (remember I'm living in Germany so a Big Boy there is extraordinary).

New video at Sweethome Alabama (HO layout in England)

Following on from some practice with the Helicon Focus software, I decided to spend some more time with the Sony Vegas video editing suite. After what seems like an eternity, I've managed to upload a new video to You Tube this evening.

The main subject is the CSX SD35 which just happened to be hanging around after yesterday's photo shoot.

Improving depth of field in my modelling photography

Following a discussion on photography and depth of field  I downloaded a 4-week trial of some computer software called Helicon focus

http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfocus.html

Simply put, the software takes a number of partially-focused photos and layers them on top of one another to produce a single perfectly focused shot.

Bellyaching and Complaining

Boy have I seen alot of bellyaching and complaining here lately (I am guilty of it too) and it doesn't really help any of us (except maybe to blow off excess steam). So instead of bellyaching or complaining maybe what we need to do is to point out possible solutions rather than problems.

Port Alberni Subdivision rail hike

This past Sunday, Jul 17, a non-railroading friend and I hiked the 10 miles from the Hump east of Port Alberni to the east end of Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island. The roadbed is in terrible shape as are the trestles. Though there is always talk of reopening the line, it will take millions and I doubt that it will be ever reopened. The link below show pictures of the overgrown railbed, trestles, trestle detail, old growth fir trees, general scenery, tie and tie plate piles along with flange greasers.

Forced Perspective & Ballasting Question

Hello all:

I am boomer who, with my wife, is starting our first layout. We are doing a simple 4X6 HO layout with a rural scene on one side and an urban scene on the other. Hopefully the pictures provides some idea of the layout.

First, track is laid and weathered. Is it best practice to add ballasting before or after scenery is added??
