Modeling general discussion

Any good alternatives to Shapeways?

In August I had a part printed by Shapeways.  I had it printed in 2 different orientations to see if stepping was going to be an issue and which way would best minimize it.  Both printed perfect and the design needed no modifications so I put in another order.  That's when the problems started.....

Clubs or Groups in Minnesota

Hi there,

I live in Minnesota (Minneapolis) and have been modeling for over 30 years and would like to know if there are any active groups in Minnesota that are accepting new members, have a layout, need work done, operating sessions etc.? I've looked around the web and have found some sites, but they all look like they are many years old and when I contact the moderator I never hear back.

Any good Minnesotan's out there that know any? I model the Milwaukee Road in the 60's - 70's.

Thanks,

Tim

What's On Your Work Bench - October 2017

It's three hours to October 1st. So we'll start a little early. (That's EST for you other time zones.)

With cooler weather coming, I'm sure there will be plenty of projects to get working on now that the lawn doesn't need to get mowed that often.

Let's see what is on your work bench or what you're working on.

Tips for programming decoder with custom horn sound (LokSoud/LokProgrammer)

I just got a LokProgrammer and have identified the Nathan K2 horn recording that I want to use on a decoder. The audio clip I'm working with needs a tiny bit of work. There's half a 'ding' from a grade-xing bell at the start that needs to be chopped off. I'd be interested in people's experiences with horn sound effect programming.

The unmanicured horn recording I have is about 3.5 seconds. What is the recommended master clip length for a sound effect that will end up looping?

Like Rick Wade, I am moving on.

Like Rick did a few weeks ago, this Friday at 4:30 PM I will officially be unemployed. Its been an incredible 22 years at my current post but I am looking forward to retirement. As part of that, my wife and I will be moving from here in Florida to Western Michigan. Yes I know thats backwards, but we have our reasons.

I have my layout all planned out and ready to go and will begin building it from the ground up once we get settled into our new place.

I hope to keep a running photographic account of the various phases of construction.

stay tuned.

Masking putty for glazing on plastic structures?

Is there a "masking putty" made for masking off small areas on plastic models? I have quite a few built-up N-scale Kato apartment buildings with lots of small windows that I would like to spray-paint. The glazing appears glued on and doesn't seem to easily pop out (maybe they do, I was just afraid of breaking it). I suppose I could use small squares of Tamiya masking tape, but I thought someone made a malleable masking putty of some sort. Thanks!

Does anyone recogize these things?

Gang,

I am going through a box of stuff I picked up at a hobby show. Usually, it is fairly easy for me to know what I am looking at but these items are totally unfamiliar to me. Has anyone seen them? What are they, what to they do and how to I use them?

I assume this is the front side
