Missing "The Gazette"

Hi Charlie,

I am sure you are overwhelmed with your "promotion", but I hope you can get back to publishing "The Gazette" soon.

Southern pacific Lines?

Does anyone know when SP stopped using Southern Pacific Lines and went to just Southern Pacific. The reason I ask is this.  I picked up an MTH GS-4 #4449 fairly cheap but never run and it is lettered Southern Pacific Lines. So I looked and found on ebay a mint MTH 8 car passenger set which I thought was advertised as Southern Pacific Lines. I recieved the passenger car set this morning and on opening found it lettered Southern Pacific. I natuarlly want to run both together but I wondering if it is prototipically correct to run with the two lettering styles.

Book Reviews-Island Timber and Mountain Timber

I've spent the last few months reviewing these two books and find more useful information each time I open a cover. Though these two books are detailed histories of logging in the Comox area of Vancouver Island, the methods used would apply just as well to Washington or Oregon coastal logging. For anyone interested in west coast logging they would be a valuable reference. The text leans heavily towards local history and the people, but it is the pictures and diagrams that are of special interest to a model railroader.

Railfanning in Mechanicsburg, PA

Please forgive me that this is 1 to 1 scale; however, I found the pictures interesting and the story amusing.  I was in Mechanicsburg, PA visiting friends and the several times I was in the downtown area I saw a number of trains passing through town behind some buildings.  My PA friends said that they were in the process of restoring the old station so one morning I grabbed a coffee and walked downtown to the station for some railfanning - about a 30 minute walk.

Fascinating News Article on Long Trains, Derailments and Distributed Power

www.financialpost.com/news/long+trains/4348592/story.html

I came across this fascinating article in the Canadian Financial Post today.  It deals with the how CN and CP are using longer and longer trains to increase efficiency.  The associated risks of derailment and use of distributed (CP) vs head end (CN) power are described

Drawing conventions and notations for panel design -- how to start

My layout is reaching the point where I am starting to think of how I want to operate it. Have been playing a bit with JMRI and looked at TrainController. But I am finding it a bit difficult to convert my track 'plan' into the symbolic arcs of the style I see in example control panels. Can anyone suggest sources of inspiration and documentation conventions that could help me on the way?

Eastern Car Works?

Does anyone know if Eastern Car Works is still in business? I've been looking for some of their "Taylor" passenger trucks, and can't find anything about them. They used to have some good stuff; I hope it's not gone for good.

All Aboard 2011 - Saskatoon Model Train Show

Just got back from the All Aboard 2011 train show at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon, hosted by the Prairie Rail Workshop model railroad club.  My son and I enjoyed the show once again and one of my favourites was back this year - the live steam engines.  Unfortunately, I failed to charge my camera battery last night, so I ran out of juice and also didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to for fear of running out of juice.
