Modeling topic
Are the contrasting colors on prototype reefers and boxcars paint or car cement?
I am working on detailing some cars (BB+) whose sides contrast with their ends and/or roofs.
Is there somewhere I can learn which cars had which?
I can tell you that this is a topic on which Google does a great deal better on recall than on relevance.
And what is used on black boxcar doors, e.g., New Haven, paint or cement?
thanks for your help.

New Brewery customer on the HHJ RxR
I'm about to start to add a brewery to my layout and decided on the Hampden Brewery which was about 1 mile from where I live. It is long been closed but one of the 1800's buildings is still standing.
The Hampden Brewery opened in 1868 - 1975. Had many owners and the last owner was Piels

DCC decoder with Arduino Nano: Problem to get it to work
Hi.
I'm trying to use Geoff Bunza's nice DCC decoder projects on a Arduino Nano but it don't work very well.
The stationary decoder I can get to control some LED:s over DCC, but after awhile they stops lighting and I have to send the command again to relit the LED. Seam like some timing is incorrect, but where?
Any help is much appreciated.

ahm ho 0-4-0 help
So for the past week I've been trying to install a dcc decoder into a ho ahm 0-4-0. I've insulated just about everything but it keeps shorting out. I've removed the motor. Insulated wheels from the frame but just can't figure out what I'm not doing. Has anyone attempted to add dcc to one of these. Because this is one of those projects I might just leave be. Thanks for any help I can't get yall. Have a great day.

SQUARES
The thread on Givens and Druthers got me to wonder about Squares.
The first reference in Model Railroader is in the article 'Doodling By The Squares" by John Armstrong in November 1980
Square is described in - Track Planning For Realistic Operation, Second Edition 1979. I don't know if it was in the First Edition 1963 and reprinted a number of times through 1976.
S+R+2C
S Square, R Minimum Radius, C Track center spacing
Gauge issues with Code 100 Shinohara 3 way switch
While relaying my staging yard throat to a better layout I elected to use one of my Shinohara 3 way switches as it's geometry fits well with the location. Staging is laid with Code 100 Atlas track and Shinohara switches.
Econami decoder programming
This is probably a dumb question for you dcc pros but I'm not.
I've installed a new Soundtraxx econami in an older Life Like Proto SD45 and I can get it to function in address 3 but can't get it to program to the 4 digit diesel #. I program it on the program track using an MRC Wireless system. I've installed other decoders with success but for some reason I'm forgetting something here.

Modeling Amtrak - Thoughts?
Driving through St. Louis the other day, my 7 year old son caught sight of an Amtrack train crossing the Mississippi River. (I might have pointed it out to him.) Since then he has asked numerous times if we can get an Amtrak train to run on the (my) layout. I am attempting to model the Midwest in the 1950's. I have never really followed Amtrak much and don't know much about the changes in phases over the years.
Audible Electrical Short Warning
Anyone know of an off-the-shelf device that would give an audible signal when there is a short in the track power? I have circuit breakers that trip to protect the power supply but sometimes the first hint I have of a problem is the overheating of the ICs on the board. At one of my op sessions an engine got derailed and before I realized the problem the circuit breaker was cooked.
I use Rail Lynx and the track voltage is regulated at a constant 12.5 DC.
