Trackwork

Quiet Street Running

I am building a section of layout that requires a large section of track, including turnouts, embedded in concrete streets.  I have done this before (pics posted on this site someplace) using plaster. That worked out well except for one detail, the SOUND!  It was horrible, sounded like the train was running on glass rail! I vowed never to do that again.

On the last layout the track was laid on foam, no roadbed. This time the track is laid on homasote over plywood.

Never be afraid to make changes on the fly...

So today is another one of those days that highlight the constant changes that can be, and that are often made to a model railroad as they are being built.
It's often the case of a fresh set of eyes can change things, and the below case is just another example.
The yard lead into the Shippensburg Yard will undergo yet another change that will make operations much better & smoother too.

Renovating track in 1:1

I came across this video of travk being pulled up to be replaced. Its amazing how much more rigid our 'flextrack' is than the prototype!

Peco switches! Head is spinning!

I'm sure this has been discussed before but my head is spinning.  I've read all of these posts on how to wire or install Peco electrofrog switches vs insulfrog switches.  I see all of these special wiring diagrams on Peco electrofrog switches running wire from here to there.  I don't care to do all of that.  If I understand correctly, all I have to do is add insulated rail joiners on the two inside rails leaving the frog and that is basically it.  One guy said unsulfrog vs electrofrog in a moot point.

Harrisburg East - Yard Lead Entrance...

Today centred around getting the turnout installed from the Harrisburg East - Mainline.

Flextrack not stuck to caulk?

I notice that one of my  spur tracks has about a foot of flextrack that has popped loose from the acrylic caulk. I've never had this problem before and usually have to use a knife blade under the ties to get flextrack loose from the caulk. I weighted it when installing and it looked fine at the time so I'm wondering what went wrong. Anyone else seen this happen? I'm wondering if the caulk was old or perhaps the flextrack had some mold release or other slippery surface contaminate?

HO code 100 flex track

Does anyone know if Model Power still makes HO code 100 NS flex track?

Tillig track & turnouts

As I mentioned just recently I was visiting with Michael Rose this past weekend and he was showing me some of the finer points about the Tillig brand track and turnouts he was utilizing in his current build. I wanted to see what else might have been written about this hardware as we don't see its name that often in American model railroading.

Could that be because its a German product, and we automatically classify it as a European train product rather than American?

It sure looked impressive to me.

Working on the Shippensburg Classification Yard...

Working on the alterations to Shippensburg Classification Yard today, the changes will allow local freights to be made up from an arriving freight from “the rest of the world” via Staging.

Code 80 / 83 N scale rail

Hi Guys:

Im looking at going to code 80 flex for my N scale San Luis and Rio Grande.  Biggest reasons 1 Durability, 2 Cost, 3 Availability (My LHS has it, NO ONE in this area carries code 55).

The only fly in the ointment is that I'm having a tough time finding a supply of code 80 rail for hand laying turnouts.  Fast tracks carries Micro Engineering code 83, will that be a problem to use that?

Other thoughts and comments?

Thanks

TIM
