Qubelock framing for layouts

I came upon a posting regarding this that may be useful, here  http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=42605&whichpage=11

Middle school model RR: a sawtooth learning curve

Since my regular math classes have their hands (and minds) pretty full right now with homework and new classroom routines, I got the model railroad project back under way last week during a once-a-week elective called Applied Math. We only had an hour, and most of the students in the elective were not among those who worked on the project last year, but they were very eager to contribute nonetheless.

Looking for Upper Deck design idea's

Good Morning,

I am looking for ideas on building my second ( upper ) deck on an HO layout. This is a free standing layout with no wall support. I would like to avoid fastening to the ceiling if possible.

My main area's of interest are the loop at the end of the peninsula. I anticipate the widest point of overhang will be 18" to 21" in some spots. I am using dimensional lumber.

Any suggestions and or pictures ( love those pictures ) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Benchwork complete!

Hi all.

Not much done these last days. Just placed 3cm foam on top of my benchwork, using Liquid Nails. This is ideal for me, because this way, I can make some depressions on the surface easily. The ground isn't  flat, so we must try to represent these irregularities. For this I use foam, as I have done in the past.

what should I put over plywood

I am just getting started in the hobby I have set up a piece of plywood for the start, what should I put on top of this that would allow me to put in scenery , that is fairly inexpensive due to being on a fixed income Or is the plywood ok to plant scenery on

Middle school model RR: a new year

Since Labor Day the month of September has been jammed with activity as the new school year gets underway. Until last Wednesday, none of that activity involved the model railroad.

Fabric or paint for table top

I am a real novice as my father, who has passed away, built the original 4X8' table top.  I am now enlarging to 6X10' a new table top (new plywood) for my son who is handicapped.  His old layout had green felt over plywood as a table top. I can't locate felt and someone suggested I use an awning fabric or paint the plywood.  Any suggestions?

This will be a simple layout no hills.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Masonite Splines

I think everyone in the past has used untempered Masonite for spline roadbed. I cannot find this anywhere. Not Lowes, not Home Depot, and not the best private lumberyards in Charlotte NC. I can get tempered hardboard anywhere but it is smooth both sides. Has anyone used this and can I glue it with Titebond II ?       Blayne

Workable fixative for track laying

I’m getting close to starting track laying on my layout and will be using Central Valley tie strips and turnouts. With the CV ties it seems to work best to have the ability to fine-tune the position of the ties and thus it would be nice to have an adhesive with a slower dry time.

I’ve used caulk in the past with good success for laying flex track, but it gets tacky too quickly. I’d like to know what other adhesives modelers are using that may give me the added dry time. I’ll be laying the ties on homasote.
