Locos - Rolling stock (general)

Repairing gears on truck axles

I'm fixing an O Scale (2-rails) GP9 for a friend. It's a Red Caboose GP9, DC only. It stopped working recently out of the blue. After cleaning wheel contacts and making sure the motor worked well, opening it revealed the core of the issue:

Bachmann DCC Sound S4 Died During Programming - Help?

A couple months ago, I purchased a Bachmann DCC Sound Value S4 to use at my sand pit industry and it ran really well.  Then I repainted it, had some issues with it running, but worked on it and it was running great again.

Weather it with a Grain of Salt! Salt weathering on rolling stock.

Hi all,

Following interest on a previous topic of mine, where I presented an EMD E8m locomotive which had some of its weathering done using the salt weathering process / technique I prepared a "small" post presenting how I am employing this technique.

Coupler conversion of Kato HO Bi-Level cars

Can anyone tell me how to convert the stock Kato HO Bi-Level passenger car couplers to Kadees? I bought the recommended Kadee coupler conversion kit #451 and put it together, but I'm not sure how to install it as a replacement for the Kato swivel coupler. It most likely needs shims, but the bigger problem is that it swivels side to side and I don't see how to correct that. I've attached a couple pictures but am not a great photographer.

Stewart (Kato) F7 questions

Hi all,

I am considering getting my first F7 units (I know its strange that i don't have any yet smiley ). Based on what i have read on their running qualities and long term reliability, i am leaning towards getting Stewart units, either Kato built or later. I would very much appreciate your input on some specific questions i got based on the reading i have done so far.

Wiring for Ditch Lights at Both Ends

I'm trying to modify an Athearn BB SW1500 to look like one of the Terminal Railroad Association's switchers. The real prototype had ditch lights at both ends. I've got the 0603 SMD's and housings for them, but my main question is how do they get wired to a decoder? Most manuals assume you only have the front/rear headlight, and front ditch lights.

If it helps, the decoder I'm planning to use is a TCS WowSound Diesel with Keep Alive.

Thanks!

High Tech Tool for Scratchbuilding in Brass

In building a TT scale caboose in brass I needed to scribe boards. The Sherline CNC mill was the answer. I also had to make a tool holder for the scriber.

The tool is a carbide scriber replacement end. It's very sharp. The scriber end is Loctited into a brass piece that has a hole in the other end to hold the spring. The whole assembly goes into the holder and that gets fastened into the mill spindle.
