Alan Wolfson dioramas

Just found this page depicting mostly New York dioramas by Alan Wolfson. While he does not seem to be a model railroader, his models are just amazing.

Fine Scale Markers – Floquil Grimy Black substitute

I haven’t had the best luck using fine tip paint pens for general graffiti, etc.  I have had pretty good results using Sukura Pigma Micron 005.  Problem is they only make black – I’m having a tough time finding any permanent marker type of pen (extra fine tip) in white.  Can anybody offer suggestions?

Vehicle Work

While I was heavily involved with this hobby in my younger college years where life is a bit more stable and time is a bit more superfluous than it is now, I discovered vehicle modeling can indeed be a hobby all unto itself.

Sadly, most of these pictures were taken in the Intel PC Pocket camera days...so they're a bit grainy!

So lets blow some dust off the old kilobytes, I know they're all here somewhere!!

New Industry - What Is It?

How about an experiment in crowdsourcing?  I finished a new industry spur for 8th Sub customer Associated Foods, which was relocated to give the structure a better configuration than my initial design.  Associated received various food products in reefers and boxcars.  To add to the modern (1980~ish) industrial park look of the area, I scratchbuilt a neighbor for it from styrene and Pikestuff parts, inspired by various rail-served customers along the former WP in Reno, NV (EDIT - the model location is in Utah).  It still needs signs, weathering, and Dullcote.

Painting molded in window mullions question

Just got around to opening the "New River Mining" I picked up a bit back and noticed that the window mullions are molded into the clear plastic. I'm used to the two piece deals with the frame and mullions applied separately and then the clear plastic is added afterward. Looking at painting these and it seems to me the best way would be to paint a piece of cardboard with a fairly wet coat of spray paint and then press the pieces onto it where the raised area picks up paint and the other part doesn't. Or is there a better way?  Tips and suggestions?

Pictures of your ballasted track

I am currently laying the ballast. I was not happy with the results and started to pester Woodland Scenics. Then it occurred to me that maybe my results were comparable to that of others. There is a feature to Easy Model Railroad Inventory that allows me to save pictures on my hard drive and another to save links to videos and pictures on the internet.

So I started going through them, looking only at the track and ballast. Looking at mine from the side it looks great, As did almost all the photos and videos. The ballast looked for the most part level, and smooth,

Need a BIG HO smokestack

I'm hoping someone out there can help me.  I need a 2 very large (150' or so) smokestacks for a building on our club layout.  They should be fairly prototypical (tapered) and I can use most any material an make it work, although I would like to keep weight down if possible.  They could be metal, pvc, styrene, faux brick, almost anything.

Any ideas?

Walthers HO 90' Turntable

I have a Walthers HO scale 90' turntable in my stash, still unopened, that I plan to use on my newly started layout.  It is an older version in that it is manually operated (no drive motor).  Walthers still offers the basic drive motor assembly for the turntable and I'm debating whether to pick one up or not.
