Scenery - Structures

I need some advice on some prep for some wood peices...

Hello all.

I have some structures I am putting together. They are no craftsmen, but are card stock with some wood pieces that will need to be painted. My question is how to prep the wood pieces for painting. Do they need to be sealed before painting? When I was a kid I used to build model rockets and we had to seal the wood before painting. I was wondering if it is the same?

What to seal it with if necessary?

What paint to use or brand?

Any advice you can throw my way would be great.

How to attach details...

I have items like fences, road barriers and the like to add to my cork or foam base on my HO layout. My question is simple:

How do you attach them. For trees and telephone poles I drill a very small hole and glue a straight pin. Just the tip of the pin which is very hard to cut by the way. This actually works well. The straight pin allows me to move the object around until I find the most pleasing position.

So what do I you do. Something similar? Is there an easier way?

Meet at Cedar

I haven't posted many new photos lately, but that's not because things aren't happening.  There's more scenery underway, some new track, more structures...

Here are a couple photos from a recent operating session showing a train order meet executed by the road crews of an eastbound manifest and westbound priority pig train at Cedar.  Both trains have UP pool power.  These aren't great shots, but provide views most of you haven't seen showing the big picture of the area.

Feeling like a Kid who didn't get what they wanted for christmas

About two months ago I was looking through a copy of Historic Rails when I came across a photo ad for Cornerstone's New River Mining Company (HO), which showed a totally new version of the mining company with a little red stamp over the photo which read NEW.  I quickly and eagerly read through the description and thought WOW, I have to have this!  I didn't realize at the time that what I was reading didn't really describe the photo that was in the ad. So, with great speed and agility I fetched my credit card from my wallet and ordered the kit.&nb

Whiskey Distillery

Hey guys,

I wonder how Whiskey Distillery looks like? I want to model a small one, like moonshining (hope I used the right word), illegally, hid in a forest. What makes that structure differrent of others? Any photo?

Many thanks,

Carving foam rocks, the saga continues

I now have most of the background rocks carved and coloured but I have to tidy up a bit as we've got an operating session this weekend. It would probably mess up our timetable if we had to get out the rotary plow and push through piles of pink "snow".

At any rate, I couldn't resist plugging in a few temporary trees to get a feel for what the scene will look like. I'll say this, planting trees in foam rock is EASY. Just jam em' in.
