Locos and rolling stock

Detail gallery links...

So far I've upload detail shots of BNSF 560, a Dash 8-40BW. I have yet to edit & upload shots of 8704 (GP60) and 123 (GP60M).

Running characteristics of the sound decoders

I'm considering some Tsunamis or possibly Loksound decoders for some upcoming locos. I've got a pretty good idea of how the QSI does their BEMF. What do people feel about the BEMF compensation in the Tsunami or Loksound decoders? What about their lighting effects with LEDs?

Sunrise enterprises? Detail parts

OK, so i can get Details West locomotive parts from any online hobby shop that sells them until the cows come home . What i need is the rear light cluster for the SP units from Sunrise Enterprises and i can't find a soul that sells them or if they do, they are always out of stock. Any suggestions?  thank you,   chuck

Paint stripping

As a somewhat related topic to my other post, what are you using to strip old shells?  I can get some reasonable prices from online people, or ebay, if I don't mind buying the less popular roadnames.  I've used Simple Green in the past on metal miniatures but not so much on the plastics and it was pretty slow.  Again, with cats around and the possibility of small children on carpets and whatnot, less toxic would be better if possible as I don't really have an easy place to dispose of toxic residue being in a condo.

Thanks.

Stripping down and rebuilding locomotives

I snagged a couple of custom painted Kato SD40s off ebay.  The shells are ok, but the mechanisms need work.  Of course the listing neglected to mention they were used.  One makes a heck of a screech before it gets moving and in general they need to be torn apart, rewired, and then put back together before I even think about putting in decoders.

I'll be using Joe's AutoTransmission Fluid suggestion for the rebuild.  So I've got two questions on this.

Problem with Athearn SD-40

  Hi guys,

Recommended SD9

I was looking at installing a Revolution in the BlueLine SD9 I have.  Just disabling the speaker and running it back and forth shows that it's considerably louder in one direction vs the other.  It's not really LOUD as such, but it seems odd.  Also, looking at the detail on it I'm thinking it's really going to be fragile to do what I want to do with it without accidentally shearing half of it off.

HO Scale Maxi-IV Side-by-Side Comparison

I recently got my IMRC Maxi-IV (have had a Kato version for a month now), and got around to creating a side-by-side comparison of the cars: http://modelrailroadtips.com/index.php?op=Articles;article=216

Locomotive Preference

I hit one of the local shows this weekend.  While there I was checking out some of the Tower 55 offerings.  No prices on the box so I'm not sure what my wallet was in for.  I picked up one of the NS units and took a good look at it and was, quite frankly, not impressed.  What detail I could see was buried in a paint job that was far too thick.  Alligator finish and drips abounded.  Ok, maybe this was just that particular unit.  Nope, it seemed to be pretty much any of the ones I picked up.  Maybe not the poor finish, but the paint was just too thick.&
