Athearn RTR SD40 DCC Ready

Hi Guys, Bigstew again!

I've got an athearn SD40 RTR with the 9 pin plug and I think the circuit board on top of the motor has been burnt out.  Is this a common occurance with this item or more likely a one-off?  Other than this irritant I am quite impressed with the new SD40!

Athearn Genesis HO SD45-2 DCC Sound

Hi Everyone, Bigstew here!

Prototype Research

I'm curious what online resources folks use for prototype research on locomotives and rolling stock, and what specific information about locos and rolling stock people look to find.  Movement (location) history?  Repairs? Dimensions?  Photos?  Other items?

Further, I'm also curious what people find difficult about prototype research, and what they wish could be better.

Railbox boxcars

Did Railbox have turquoise-colored boxcars at one time?

I know they had yellow ones ( I have four) but I seem to vaguely remember seeing turquoise-colord boxcars when I was growing up (or is my imagination playing tricks on me?).

Thanks!

Atlas RS1 questions

I went to a local show last week and found a steal of a deal - a custom painted, detailed and weathered Atlas Classic RS1 for my line! I installed a Digitrax 165AO that I had in the parts box, and it works great. Unfortunately I'm getting some strange motor noises when I run at slow speeds.

O scale small Steam Locomotive that runs as good as the On30 stuff

I have an On30 layout that I will be adding some standard gauge track to for an interchange as well as a visual impact aid to show just how diminutive the narrow gauge Rolling Stock really is.  I am looking for a good operating locomotive that is relatively small.  I have seen a Little River 2-4-4-2 by NJ International, and a Casper Lumber ”Sampson" 2-6-6-2 by Sunset on E-bay.  The other small one I have found is new, an SP Mogul als

BQ23-7!

I recently finished my first BQ23-7 for a customer... It uses an Atlas B23-7 and a Bachmann BQ23-7 cab, heavily modified to fit. 100% custom paint as well. I have one more in a fantasy Chessie paint to finish up this coming week, then plan to do 2 more for myself.

Joe's Miracle Weathering Powders on a Box Car (Test)

After watching Joe's videos, I was impressed with his weathering powders, and thought I'd give it a whirl. After collecting the materials, I made up three mixes, the light tan, light gray, and sooty black. I took a new box car, and went to town.

Before any powder

one coat of light gray

a second coat of light gray
