Amtrak 40th Anniversary sightings

On May 1st, the National Railroad Passenger Corp, or Amtrak celebrates its 40th anniversary!  In honor of this occasion, Amtrak is repainting some locomotives and rolling stock in the older paint schemes.

There was a sighting of the first locomotive in Phase III paint this weekend:

Loco lighting

 Hi all,

This question also has to do with the BR101/ALP 46 color thread I started.

Since the loading gauge in N. America is wider that Europe, the lighting 'trees' don't fit the ALP 46.What I mean by that is,clear arcylic is used to bring the light source from the bulbs to the headlights.Alright, has any one built their own?Plastruct has them, maybe in the right size, using them and crystal-clear cement might do the trick?

How about fiber optics?Bend-able?Good source for something in HO?

Manufacturer and item number

I have many cars I purchased used. Though they might be kits most are assembled. My problem and my question is I do not know who made them and the product number. The great majority of them do not have the manufacturer on the car any where that I can find. Some do, much less than one percent. I think most of them are Athearn Blue Box but that is just a guess.

Is there a source?

Athearn PA-1/PA-2 Locomotive Kits

long time reader, first time poster so apoligies if this is in the wrong spot

I keep seeing Athearn PA-1 and PA-2 kits advertised on ebay, I would like to find one unbuilt so I can have a go myself, I understand that Athearn doesn't really make kits anymore - Does anyone know where I could find some?

I'm hoping to do something like the 'More Power for America' demo livery

Loading HO scale Open Autoracks

I am looking to "load" some open  HO scale autoracks, 1 triple deck and 2 double deck.  There are cast automobiles available but in addition to being somewhat pricy ($10 to 15 bucks EACH) they are also HEAVY, and even if I took out the built in weight, the car would be very much over weight if loaded with these cars

So..., anyone know of any cheap, decent, plastic automobiles and/or pickup trucks circa 1968 to 1970 or have a better idea on how to load these cars?

Thanks....   Jim

What is the best type of paint to use on plastic engine shells?

I have started detailing engines and am not sure what paint to use.  I have been using airbrushed acrylic paints with acrylic matte coating, but I am not too thrilled with the results.  Does anyone have suggestions on a different type of paint to try?

Does anyone know what color the orange is on the ALP 46?It is only used on steps and handrails, does some one make that color?Or is there is some close I can use as a start?

N-Scale Bachmann Spectrum N84551 Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolidation with Decoder

I'm considering the purchase of one of the new models N-scale Bachmann Baldwin 2-8-0's N 84551 which comes with a decoder installed.  I'd appreciate any information on its performance and quality.  Can you install a sound decoder in it?

Thanks,

Bob
