Decals, anyone try making their own using an inkjet printer?
I recently played with making my own decals using paper from Micro Mark on my Canon 600 series inkjet printer. My fiancée is a retired graphic designer/artist and made me some nice artwork. I printed a set on white and clear paper. Once I had the settings adjusted correctly it did a nice job of printing. I then sprayed the sheets with Krylon gloss spray from can per the instructions. After letting the Sheets dry I started cutting out the decals. The first thing that happened was they got little cracks through them and looked like drying mud!
Freight Car fleet - Science or Mysticism
Having felt the soft touch of the UP and riding the furlogh board..lol..I now have more time to look into my layout and some details I have been neglecting.

blackened wheels
I rather impulsively purchased some blackened metal wheels without realizing that the treads are blackened too. I have read that some folks use a wire brush rotary tool to take paint off the treads and flanges. will this work for factory blackened?
desk locomotive conversion?
I picked up a desk display HO scale NS locomotive for $10 at a garage sale recently. It was in a plastic display case on a piece of track. It has a label as coming from this place: http://mainline-models.com/
See below. A nice looking model of a GP-38-2. What brand is this? Any suggestions for what to do with this? Could I find a chassis to power it? Strip it and make it into what road name/number it should be, based on the details? Any help appreciated. A bit new to this sort of thing...
HO scale Tyco / Mantua 4-6-0 Rogers for a Back to the Future Vignette
I'm thinking about picking up an HO Scale 4-6-0 Rogers by Mantua or Tyco. I'm aware of the shortcomings of the tooling and that the engine would fit better on an Sn3 layout than HO. But I'm BN guy at heart with a soft spot for all things 1980s.
Walthers Mainline Locos
Has any one notice if they set their walthers mainline locos speed to a over 70 mph they get a buzzing noise seems to come from the wheel gears or motor. I've noticed it on many walthers mainline locos. Probably why they gear them to run at 65 mph by default.
Mallet Tanks - Gap Between Tank and Cab?
I'm looking at photos of 2-6-6-2 saddle-tank engines, in preparation for scratchbuilding one in On30. I've noticed that most, if not all, of the North American tank engines of this type have a gap between the rear of the tank and the front of the cab:
Atlas Master series loco light bulb recomendations
Looking for recommendations (size, rating and source) for an Atlas HO Master/Silver series diesel locos forward and reverse bulb. I'm looking for direct one for one replacement of the grain of wheat style lights. NOT looking to switch led at this time. Here is a picture of the current one barely glowing (below)
Thanks
Steve
