Scenery and structures

DIY photo backdrop folks, 2 questions for you .....

For those that print your own smaller backdrops what paper are your using?  I' thinking building shots for my mill scene to fill in the noticeable emptiness and lack of depth

Also, has anyone tried sanding the paper thinner to better hid the hard edge?  I'm thinking similar to like was done to thin magazine ads to apply to buildings for a poor man's decals.

TIA

Steve

Ideas for an HO layout industry?

Hi,

Sorry if this is this wrong place to post. I am new to this site and am looking for places to find ideas for my HO track.  I am very interested to design an industry based scenario for my track but can't locate any design ideas or what the first steps should be.  Track is done but now the hardest and most enjoyable part needs a beginning.

Thank you all for ideas, suggestions and leads.

AWESOME scenery spray bottle

Have you ever had sand or ballast get all messed up when you tried to wet it before gluing, I hate it when that happens.  My wife got this bottle for doing hair stuff and I love how fine of and soft of a mist this puts out.  If you pull the trigger just a little you get a quick fog, if you hold it down it goes for a much longer time without having to keep pumping it.  also, it works at any angle without running out, even upside down!

lumbermill

I found this information about Logging operations and Lumbermills that some of you might find interesting.

this ebook has chapers on logging and milling operations and was published in 1910 so would be a good source for that era and later.

Getting the Backing Off AMB Shingles

I've been experimenting with the American Model Builders peel and stick shingles. Specifically set #285 3-tab shingles. I like the appearance of this product, they adhere well and take coloring very well. My problem has been with removing the backing from the shingles. I've been using a knife blade to try to find the separation plane for each strip of shingles. Sometimes I find it and sometimes I get a spot that is 2 plies of the paper. Once I get it started it's no problem. Does the group have any advice on starting a peel?

Any Model Ship Builders in our mix?

Morning all,

For some time I have contemplated building a Schooner / step ship.

Recent layout planing is leading to starting the project prior to the layout for a number of reason. The most promenade is to ensure i have enough deck clearance for the mast of the ships.

Im curious if anyone here has and model ship building experience they can share. My ideal would be to build a model of Wapama as there are very detailed plans available but I'm after a smaller vessel.

Applying Static Grass Over Existing Ground Foam Scenery

My existing scenery is a variety of fine and coarse ground foam over dirt, all held in place with diluted matte medium.  I am wanting to largely convert to using static grass.  I'm wondering if 1. I can apply the static grass over the existing ground foam, 2. need to pick off the large pieces of ground foam, or 3. need to scrape off all the ground foam before applying the static grass using an applicator.  Any suggestions as to the best approach?

Building interiors

I have recently completed several DPM structures. I would like to download photos that I can use for the interior of these buildings. I would appreciate knowing of any website that you would recommend for this project.

Best HO tractor trailers

In my opinion, vehicles can make or break a scene.  This is the first time I have modeled anything close to the modern era since I have been modeling 1915 for the past 15 years, so I literally know about nothing when it comes to trucks and trailers.  I am building a model of Thurmont's NVR homes for my Maryland Midland RR and thanks to Google Earth I can see that there are a number of tractor trailers on the site.

Woodland Scenics N scale

Sorry in advance if this has been posted. I did go back and look for the subject.

One of the first thing I’ve learned, “N scale” have slight variances from manufacture, anywhere from 1:140, 1:150, and 1:160. The keen eye can easily tell.

I’ve yet to purchase any Woodland Scenics ready-built structures, vehicles, even figures.

Does anyone know what ratio Woodland Scenics considers “N scale”? I prefer 1:160
