Track and electrical/DCC

DCC Trackwork

Fellow Modelers:

I am starting a new layout and will be using NCE DCC.  I would like you input on which tack is best suited.

Supplied Power AC Filter

Would adding a supplied power AC filter of some sort be recommended for large DCC set ups? We set up at convention centers and at one of these I could stand on the power cord that runs across the floor and feel the power. It was like water running through a pipe. Made me nervous if our system was at risk.

Tortoise Herding

It's time to install some switch machines in my layout. Not because anything is hard to reach or that the layout is large, but just because I want them. I've bought a herd of tortoises and am about halfway through the job. I thought it might be interesting to document my adventures here in hopes that others will share their experiences too.

Bruce-Twisted wires

A twisted bus is a good thing, right?  I believe so, and made sure to do it on my recent bus-wire upgrade to thicker gauge.  But at the same time I installed a Tam Valley octopus, and it mentions keeping the input wires under 24 inches or so to avoid interference.  I'm at about 24 inches and I have no problems, but I have to wonder: does twisting the bus wires keep them from emitting interference???

Just curious, and sorry if that was ever mentioned in one of your articles.

Richlawn RR V2 - Track painting

While I'm waiting for Dave at Backdrop Junction to print my order for backdrops I wanted to make some kind of progress on the layout so I decided to do some track painting.  I don't have any special method, but just follow what I've seen here on MRH and in some books and magazines that I've read.  The only thing that I did was custom match the rail color to an actual photo of track.  My tie colors are a mixture of flat Testors colors.

android device train control

I have heard about all the control apps for iPhone, iPad, computers etc. My question... is there one for a android device?

DCC Power Bus LocoNet Proximity

My planned layout has extended sections of benchwork that are 6, 9 and 12 inches in depth.
If I run the main powerbus close to the back wall, will there be an issue with the LocoNet cable running along the fascia? (Power bus likely 14ga)

Thanks in advance.

JMRI + PR3 = DCC system?

Somebody told me the other day that a Digitrax PR3 (XTRA), hooked up to a computer running JMRI, was all I needed to run DCC on a small layout.  I've been looking into a SPROG 3 (plus laptop with JMRI) for upgrading my Husher Central layout from a DC power pack, but the PR3 seems like a less-expensive and better-available option -- if it works... (Edited: I had mistaken the SPROG II for the SPROG 3.)

Could use some electrical help on DCC & Auto reverser modules.

Could use some electrical help on DCC & Auto reverser modules.

Am building this WYE and using the wye at Reno Junction, Ca as the prototype. Just not too sure which legs to isolate for a reverser?  Have three Tortoise machines and two DPDT switches to run them.

All legs go around the room.

Thanks  RJ
