Crossing Signals: Tomar vs. NJ Internationl vs. Details West vs. Berkshire

I'm curious what kind of experience people have had with the crossing signals I mentioned in the title and if there are others you would recommend? I'm looking for the most prototypical; ones that flash and can be activated by an IR sensor. Please feel free to add what kind of IR sensor you placed and how it works.

Thanks,

Burt

Anyone use Details West joint bars to join track intead of track joiners?

I've been looking at the Details West joint bars and fishplates for the main reason of detailing my track, but part of me wants to do away with the track joiners and solder the track together with the brass joint bars; where insullation is needed I would use the the plastic kind. I've already planned on using drops on all sections of my track, so using the joiners for current would not be an issue. Anyone ever do this before?

Thanks,

Burt

turnouts

Question? I have to turnouts that work fine in one direction, but if i run the trains in the opposite direction they will derail most of the time. I am using a Bachmann train set in HO scale. They are electric turnouts.

Any clever double crossover/slip motor approaches?

In the layout under construction there are a couple of double crossovers and (so far) a double slip. The straightforward approach would appear to be one motor for each set of points. Thats a lot of expensive turnout motors! Thinking about the crossovers I realized that there are three positions of the four points possible -- both sides open or either cross-over thrown. Be nice if there was a three position tortoise motor! Anyhow, I am a newbie on these matters and am curious if any of the old hands have developed a better approach to automating these kinds of turnouts?

Derailer

There has been some mentions about derailers and there placements on other treads in the forum. I want everyone to help gather the information in one single tread so we can all easy find it and help fellow modelers to use the proper placement.

I am myself wondering where to place them on sidings and spurs. I'm planning to install derailers on my layout but don't know where they are placed on the prototype. I know a little about there placement on the Norwegian railroad, but not the american railroads. Any help will be appreciated.

install new decoder

Hello everyone!

I have a Bachman GP30 DCC on board and I want to install a new decoder. I think Bachman is a basic decoder because the motor is poor running. I am a novice but I want to install  the new decoder myself.

This is a picture of the Bachman  decoder:http://yfrog.com/0xdscf1652wj

Can you help me?

Is it posible to use an N scale decoder in an HO engine

I was wondering if it was posible to put an N scale decoder in an HO engine. I thought I saw an add in

one of the model railroad magazines that Digitrax was advertising one of thier N scale decoders would

work in tight spaces. Has anybody out there done this.

Adding sound to fifteen locomotives

One of the projects that I hope to accomplish in the next 10 or twelve months is to add sound to about fifteen locos in the transition period, that is a mix of steam and first generation diesel. What I have to work with is a number of P2K GP9's, GP7's, SD7's, S1's (or 2's or 3's) a PA, an RS3 from Atlas, 2 or 3 Genesis F3  and F7 AB's, several Spectrum 280's and a Mountain,  two Mantua 462's (last edition before they folded, two Genesis 282's and a couple of IHC 260's and  440 as well. None of these are currently have DCC decoders of any sort for consideration.
