Benchwork and roadbed

What material do you use for splines?

I've read plenty of articles and looked at YouTube and TrainmastersTV. Everyone seems to use either Homasote or Masonite. Maybe I'm asking for the wrong thing, but I just don't see anything suitable of either of those anywhere in my mid-sized city. I can buy Masonite doors, but not sheet Masonite. I can find 1/2" Homasote, but nothing thinner. What are you using?

Single Bevel or Double Bevel Miter Saw

I'm about to purchase a miter saw.  Just using it for benchwork and some basic home projects.  Would a double bevel be worth the extra cost?

Also, is a laser guide a good choice to have?

EPS Foam for SUBroadbed?

Hi,

Has anyone ever tried using EPS foam (blue or pink board) as the subroadbed for your layout?   I'm considering it since it should be lighter and easier to cut than plywood (and I want a lightweight layout). Of course it would have to be fully supported, like on a hollow core door or such, since by itself it will sag across any kind of span. Seems it should be at least the 1" thick stuff, tho 2" could be overkill.

Attaching foam to plywood

I'm about to attach 2" foam to 5/8" plywood. I've noticed a lot of folks seems to use Liquid Nails for Foam but I'm think of using silicone caulk instead. Any comments?

Converting Walthers N Scale Motorized 130 foot Turntable to HO scale 70 Foot Turntable

I acquired a Walthers  N Scale Motorized 130 foot Turntable on a hobby shop closing special with the intention of converting it to a 70 foot HO turntable which I need for my Port Costa roundhouse scene. I just measured it and it is only 69 scale HO feet but that will do for the wheelbase of the HO SP consolidations and moguls which will use the turntable.  The prototype pit for the Port Costa turntable was quite shallow and the plastic pit will work OK.

Roto Zip For Cutting Homasote

Good afternoon.

Has anyone used a "roto zip" for cutting Homasote for roadbed and, if so, was it successful?

Thanks and regards,

Bart

A different method of spline construction.

I have been wanting to write this for a couple years now but didn’t have a good picture of the concept!  Recently I needed a bridge in a spot where the railroad existed and had to cut out a section of my spline sub roadbed. I was wondering what I would do with it.  Sleep is a great place to create.  I picked up the cutout section and it came to me that I had what I needed to show you all what I did!  This method is very strong and light at the same time.  A constant humidity environment is essential however.

On the move - Stonehammer

Had to pack up Stonehammer.

I separated the models and threw out the staging area.

Yikes! It weighs about 140lbs.

Fiddle Yard redux - Design ideas

While there are MANY forum threads here on MRH (I know, because I just spent the last half hour going through ALL of them!), NONE of them address the questions I am about to put forth.
