iphone 4 speaker

Do you cut the iphone4 speaker to fit the location in the locomotive ?  It is fairly long, but thickness and width are great size.  Thanks Zeke

Failure?

Bill, how is the failure rate on the iPhone 4s speakers? I know you had one fail and I have had one fail as well.

What say you? Any reports from customers about any failures?

Failure?

I have yet to have one fail but I did have a failure with a 1" round speaker.

I will post a couple of photos of my installs as soon as I remember where I put them

failure rate

Bill, how is the failure rate on the iPhone 4s speakers?

I've only ever had 1 customer say they had a bad one. Otherwise I've only heard good reports.

iPhone 4s speakers

Hi Chris, I did the iP4s speaker swap into Athearn's new release SD40's as well. One thing to note was it's advisable to remove the oval gasket from the sound port by the speaker. When I first reassembled the shell, the speaker was up against the inside of the shell and cut the sound right out. Wasn't very impressed till I removed the shell to see what was up and discovered the gasket. To anyone using these in this size space, make sure you tape the speaker back edge flush with the chassis weight on the opposite side. The sound difference is marked against the stock speaker, very much so in tonal quality. I got complaints at the club about the scratchiness of the Athearn fitted one. As a comparison with another sound loco, I also later got an Intermountain SD40-2 with ESU Loksound and the Athearn now out shines (sounds?) the I.M. It will be getting something better too.

HTC One M8 Speakers

I bought 6 of the HTC One M8 speakers from a US supplier at a higher price than others that can be had on ebay (he was also an ebay seller) and I bought more at a much cheaper price from China, both lots in the same enclosure as shown by Mark R and both lots had the identical speaker with the bars at each end and the raised dot in the middle of the diaphram. I have also bought the speakers on their own, but although the bars were there, the center dot wasn't. All claimed to be OEM fitment. The only one that confirmed that as a definite, was the US supplier. I did try one of the enclosed ones from China but had no success getting sound out of it. That may have been my fault, I had difficulty keeping the traces apart. What I did note between the US supplied and the Chinese ones was differences in the traces. Now it's obvious that the contacts on the ends (the only parts not coated) are designed to just press against other contacts in the phone body. The Chinese supplied had a slight kick-up to help with that contact. The US supplied had a definite kick-up. Second thing I noticed too was the the coating on the traces, thicker on the US ones. Third was serial numbers (Yes, Serial numbers. Faint but discernable), US supply, all individual, Chinese, all the same number.

I-Phone Speaker Installation Photos

The Iphone 5 replacement speaker is the only one I have used for years.  I have installed these in 20 + units and in some have nstall as many as two in a locomotive.  You can pick them up on Ebay for as little as $12.00 for 5 with free shipping.

Joe, thanks for th idea I will try that out on my next install to compair the sound quality.

Andy

Does anyone using these I-phone speakers have some installtion photos, and/or good reference links to some??

Are there 'lots' of spares available (on ebay etc) because of large numbers of failures in the phones??

Look on Ebay Wes for I-Phone 4 replacement speakers. You can normally get 5 for around $10 or less.
